Okay.. confession time... when I was a little girl.. too young to know otherwise, Neil Diamond was my homeboy. It's true. I know it's not cool, but honesty is the best policy... and my summer holidays were filled with Neil Diamond blaring from my mum & dad's stereo.
We knew EVERY song, every word, every pause, every crackle... due to the constant rotation of Neil-vinyl.... and despite slipping in a dose of Abba Arrival now and then... we secretly loved the reliability of Neil. In our house, Neil was The King.
We had a pirate VHS copy of 'The Jazz Singer', which we watched a zillion times, humming along, willing Neil to become the pop singer he was destined to be. (Now I think.. who the HECK thought that Neil Diamond and Laurence Olivier would make screen magic??! But then.. it was gold.)

So this leads me to 'A Week of Neil Diamond' where I'll be themeing each post around the title of a Neil Diamond song. It's tricky. But I think I can do it. The very excellent (!) I AM I SAID NEIL DIAMOND FAN SITE has a definitive list of Neil-tracks... so there's a heap to choose from - but I won't be writing about NEIL as such... just using him as the conduit for inspiration.
I'll be starting later today... I'm having a bit of trouble choosing between titles such as 'River Runs, New Grown Plums', 'Porcupine Pie','Soggy Pretzels' and 'Whose Hands are These'. Stay tuned. Let me know if you're joining in. And let me know if you're a closet Neil fan. I won't tell a soul. Just comment below. Ha.
xx Mikes
I am out of the closet! Only the other day did I post on my blog about my LOVE for Neil. And consequently count me in for the week of Neil.
ReplyDeleteHa Ha - we danced to "If there were no dreams" at our wedding.
ReplyDeleteMy mum constantly played Neil Diamond when we were kids so of course we have his cd's now. I can't help but sing along!
ReplyDeleteused to sing porcupine pie on the way to school every morning with my best friend...vanilla soup a double scoop please. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure "Porcupine Pie" was in one of our primary school singing books.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE NEIL DIAMOND!
ReplyDeleteOUT AND PROUD!
We grew up with him - Mum was a huge fan and had all his albums. The first album she got I was rocked to sleep with, apparently!
'I am', I said...
ReplyDeleteCan't wait, such great singing in the car music.
I kind of love Neil too! Except when my dad used to blast out Beautiful Noise on the stereo on a Sunday morning. My all time fav is Forever in Blue Jeans. Guess I'm out of the closet!
ReplyDeleteSweet caroline was sung to me by my mum because it is one of my middle names, for the other (thanks Mum) think the wizard of oz! so I like that song..
ReplyDeleteI saw him in concert because my boss at the time, a bbc producer had free tickets and hated him so her nanny went (moi).. i jumped up and swayed and sang with the others!
Then I was driven mad by Mr Diamond when the bedsit I lived in, the chap below mine played the same record day and night everyday for a year! I hated the Diamond and so did my then mod boyfriend and my now mod husband... but I say he's OK.......
I wasn't going to leave a comment but then you said to come out of the closet! Here I am. I have loved Neil all my life (we really had no choice) it was on all the time. I will even admit going to Neil Diamond in the Round Concert at the Rod Laver Arena when I was 8 1/2 months pregnant!!! It was great fun. I went with my brother and all his mates (who are younger than me) and were told to 'shutup' by the people behind us for singing!!! It was a great concert.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to reading all about Neil!
Yeah, Neil Diamond is okay. (Notice, not completely admitting in public to being a fan.) I too went to see him in concert with free tickets. My Dad worked at a radio station and would occassionally get free tickets to concerts and my Mum and I went together. I really enjoyed his concert so I'm looking forward to the 'Diamond' week.
ReplyDeleteOMG! I thought I was the only one! My 4th of July is never complete without listening to "They comin to America" while watching fireworks! Can't wait for this weeks Diamond inspirations.
ReplyDeleteOne of the best concerts in my mid twenties was a ND one. He was an awfully attractive man in his youth who couldn't love him!
