From Tralaloskop - a wonderful site - I think it's Polish but DO correct me if I am wrong - or fill me in if you know more about it! Thank you CUD, MIÓD I ORZESZKI for letting me know about that!
Another lovely Mikes reader Vintage Kid's Books My Kid Loves - alerted me to her blog on the Introduction Post. She posts every day about her favourite vintage books - and there are SO many gorgeous favourites of mine! You'll find Maurice Sendak, Ruth Krauss, Hilary Knight, The Provensens, Eloise Wilkin and lots more fabulous illustrators over there. Be sure to comment as it's a dedicated labour of love - and it's always nice to have a cheer squad! Especially when you are scanning your little heart out to make your blog nice for everyone!
The fabulous Julia Rothman's review site Book By It's Cover covers a whole lot of great illustration - including some great stuff for kids (and big kids). Contemporary illustrators rub shoulders with some old favourites - and the site is gorgeous to look at. Put it in your Reader for regular updates!
Flickr User Polka Pink Atarii has an amazing collection of Polish children's book illos on her Flickr. Go have a peek over there too! There are guaranteed to be images you've never seen before - and they're all absolutely gorgeous.
And while you're on Flickr - check out the fabulous Retro Kid, Vintage Children's Books and the Vintage Ladybird Group too! You may also like Vintage Children's Craft Books, Eye Candy - trippy, hippy kids books from the sixties and seventies, the Marcel Marlier group and Cool Endpapers too!
xx Mikes

These are all Polish, and I remember reading them years ago.. some I may have read to my sister, who is 24 now! Wow... "Pan Twardowski na kogucie" (Mr Twardowski on the rooster) and "Jas i Malgosia" are classics :)
ReplyDeletewhat a great round up of vintage illustration, thanks, i found it very inspiring!
ReplyDeleteThe Russian kidpix LJ is a wonderful site, particularly if you try not to *cough* think too hard about copyright (at times anyway).
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Polish children's books, the Polish Digital Library have about 350 kids publications available. It is a superb browsing site with a number of ways to view/skim through the (old) works and sufficient english to navigate around pretty easily.
They are 2 significant site that come to mind but there are quite a few more large institutional repositories around - see 'kids' in my delicious links if you are wanting to dig for more! And thanks for these you've posted. Julia is of course a wonderful contributor to the web!
Thanks for sharing pip. They look gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip gang o mikes. You guys rock! i used to visit book-by-its-cover daily and somehow forgot about it... now, back on the blogroll!
ReplyDeleteWow! I have just been de-cluttering the children's books at my house and you have shown some of my favourites in this post. My daughter and I would say, 'Oh, remember this? We have to keep it - look at those illustrations!'
