Clean Up For The Visitors
No hoover required here, but before you start seriously trying to gather readers for your blog... have a look around. Make sure it looks the way you want it to. Be sure you've posted lots of interesting things. Ask yourself what makes your blog special. If you're not sure, then you might need to do a bit of housekeeping to make it even nicer at your place. Are all your posts nice and neat and error free? Spell-check, neaten up your formatting, align your text - there's company coming!
You might want to consider some cute widgets (clever little icons/tools that you can use on your blog) - I like the Etsy favourites widget (found in the YOUR ETSY tab) and the Flickr Profile widget found on Big Huge Labs. Keep your widgets to a maximum of five, so that your page loads easily.
Comment
I hate to tell you this, but if you don't comment all over the place, then no one knows you are there. Yes, you're posting away happily each day... but it's not enough! Get out of your cosy little blogging-haze, and go visiting. See what other people are up to. A great way find good blogs to visit is to go to a quality blog, like Nikkishell's or mine and work your way through their links. BUT don't just say 'good work' or 'nice photo' - you really need to actually read the latest posts (at the very least) and comment thoughtfully. The more you comment about the place, the more other bloggers will say.. 'Oh, there's that Miss Banana-Bread (or whatever your blog name is) again. I must pop over to hers and see what she's all about'.
Profile Picture
Keep linking to posts you love by other bloggers. They WILL know you are linking to them (they probably check their stats and Technorati too). It's really important to let people know, if you saw a great recipe on Amy Karol's blog - then tell people you did, and why you liked it, and if you cooked it and link to Amy.
It's not just the uber bloggers you should link to - what about the nice people in your own backyard that might comment on your blog, or talk about things that you are doing. Link to them. The internet, after all, is all about links. Be careful, however, not to constantly link to the same person and I would say no more than 5 links per post (unless your post is actually something like 'My Favourite Blogs This Week' with links to 20 nice blogs). Otherwise it just gets a little too intense.
Blog Rolls
A lot of bloggers seem to agonise about getting onto other bloggers blog-rolls (it's the list of links that shows on every page of their blog - you know, featuring all the writers favourite blogs). Blog rolls are an important part of getting people to click over to you - but you shouldn't worry if you're not making it to other people's blog rolls. They probably don't update their link list regularly, or they might only link to their buddies. So don't fret if you're not on many blog rolls. There are other ways of being popular in blog land. Like writing a good blog, for instance.
Having said that - several bloggers run regular meme's (a meme is a day, week, month or even year of themed posts. Think 'This is' on Three Buttons 'On My Desk' at Kootoyoo or 'The Friday Archive's' on Loobylu) Often if you join a meme, the lovely blogger who started the meme will link to you - either in the original post describing the meme them (which they will link back to often) or in their side-bar they may have a blog roll just for people who are joining their meme (like Angela does). This is a great way to get into a blog roll! BUT don't just post along with their meme once, see your name go up in lights on their blog and then bugger off. If you say you are going to join the meme - try to contribute as regularly as you can. No one's checking up, but it's nice to honour your commitment, dontcha think? And its fun too! And it helps get you out there playing nicely with the other bloggers. They MAY even throw the ball to you!
NB - It is not nice manners to ask to be on someone's blog roll. They will put you there if they want to.
Blogging Business Cards
Often, at the old Meet Me at Mikes Stitching Nights, halfway through the night everyone would whack out their Moo cards and swap blog details. If you're going to devote your time and energy to building a good blog, then why not have a calling card you can give to friends, family, nice people you chat to in the library... and let them know how to find you. Moo is a wonderful site where you can print 100 cards for about $30US - and each card can hold a different image.. or you can make your cards all the same. They'll print your image on one side and your contact details on the other. It's a super cute, small, beautifully printed card - and it wings it's way from the UK in no time at all - and they come in a nice box too. So if you're serious about promoting your blog - get yourself a calling card. You can make it yourself, if you are so inclined, as long as it looks super good.
Once your traffic is starting to tick along (you are checking your traffic via Google Analytics, aren't you?!) - give something back to your readers, apart from your witty repartee. Giveaways are a great way to keep people visiting you. Because people love free stuff. Make sure your giveaway reflects the sort of blogger you are. No point offering up four super-bitchen brand new tyres if you're a craft blogger - a pile of vintage fabric would be better. In fact if you do a decent fabric giveaway with lovely fabric - you are guaranteed to get a heap of people vying for the winnings (and reading your lovely blog).
Memes
Memes are a good way of getting people to visit you often. If you want to start a meme, then there are a number of things you'll need to consider. Firstly - does your meme already exist?! There are lots of meme's going out there in blog land. In fact I've heard talk of meme-fatigue of late. So be sure that your meme is interesting, unique and positive. The theme of your meme should be open to interpretation in a number of ways - no point starting 'Praying Mantis Party Thursday' for instance - it's too specific and exclusive. 'I'm Going Outside....' would be a better meme, with people posting their favourite images of outside (which might include praying mantises).
Content
Yes, we're back to content again. It's really important. You must keep your content fresh, well presented and interesting. Keep telling us who you are and what you like, and we'll keep coming back. Be honest and thoughtful in your writing, and it will be a compelling read. Keep your images gorgeous. Share stuff. Content is paramount. Reward your visitors with good stuff.

Thanks for another very inspiring post Pip. I'm definitely a little crepe-y around the thirty-something so there will be no pics of me!
I didn't realise that bloggers had Moo cards just to advertise their blogs....I thought it was only for the bloggers who were actually selling things. I might have to look into that (I'm sure they'll be much prettier than my old work business cards)!
I love my moo cards! And now i'm thinking it's time to actually get round to changing my profile picture, which is the same image of a painting I sold 6 months ago that has been there from the day I started this blog. Now what to pick...i'm nearly 35 and seem to be suffering from both spots and wrinkles, so i'm not 100% sure a photo of me will do the trick!
I wonder if this has worked, I just uploaded a new profile picture!
Look Camilla! You did it! I like the new one much better!
Thanks for all of the information Pip. Another good tip is to go to a blog that you like and see who is commenting. I have just added about 20 new onces to my bloglines in about a week.
Thank you Pip for your blog tips. You have done a fantastic job writing up all the important bits.
You are very clever! and very sharing!
Thank you for being you.

Hi Pip,
Thanks a lot for all the info...not sure about the picture yet...like you, my hair changes so much ;) hehe.
I should find some time and visit your funky shop again, it's been too long. (you've go a good heater right...it's just so cold)
Ta.
"don't just post along with their meme once, see your name go up in lights on their blog and then bugger off" - haha I love it!
I'm on a bit of a blog hiatus at the moment, getting myself ready to move to a new blogging home, but this post and the last one about getting started (which I shall be doing again!) motivated me to get a move on, thanks!
Also I didn't know about "This is.." and my favourite images of outside would happen to include praying mantises, as a matter of fact.
What useful tips. The Moo card is a great idea and must look nicer than the back of whatever receipt is floating around my bag.
Another 30 something blogger here- hence my profile pic. :)
Ah fantastic. Your advice has got me thinking about other things as well. I am very motivated by your posts. Thank you
Fantastic tips, Pip. You are so generous with your knowledge and advice.
I wouldn't even have a blog if it wasn't for you telling me I must have one!!
okay, i'm finally de-lurking.
i've been coming here for a bit, and while i don't have a craft blog - just a my life/mommy blog, i wanted to finally say hello.
and thank you for all the inspiration.
so, hello.
what i wouldn't give to be able to go to your shop.
Hi pip,
Fantastic post, had me giggling out loud! And it's given me a push in the right direction - look, I am FINALLY commenting on your blog after lurking around for a while ;)
Also, loving the crafty melbourne blog, it's making me rather homesick!
Thanks for your post and your other "how to start a blog". I guess you could call me a lurker, I have been reading your posts for months now and have never commented. Nows the time! I must say I have found your blog an inspiration and rediscovered my crafting gene thanks to you. I've also ventured into blogging myself (very recently). Still trying to work it all out and your posts have been a great help. Thanks again, I'm a lurker no more!
That's great Pip. Can you add another post to the series on how to keep up with your favourite blogs and how to keep it all organised. I have a bookmarks tab that is out of control and I haven't signed up for bloglines for fear of being overwhelmed. Some tips would be fabulous.
Well, I am in the 30-something range, but I kinda like my pic, so I'm keeping it. :p
Need to look into those moo cards..I thought they were for the pros, too!
Thanks again and again!
I have to find a profile picture and how to upload...
(i have to read your tutorials once more and visit all your links and explore your blog of couse!!!)
More fantastic info! Thanks! My blog was getting a little stale (at least in my mind) and this post has some great ideas. Now I'm off to update my sidebar. :o)
This is really helpful. I just started a new craft blog and I've been thinking about how to share it with other people. I had never even heard of "memes". I still don't think I quite understand what they are...
Lots of really great info, thanks so much. There's so much to learn in the blogging world!
But..since you put it out there I just can't refrain from commenting on this: in your 30's the crepe has not truly hit! Nearing 40 now, I feel inspired to find my best photo of me and put it out there! No shame here......and I do hope others feel the same whatever the age!
this is such a great post, thanks for writing it, I've learnt lots!
thanks for the great tips. I've been blogging for awhile now, but it's nice to get a bit of a "refresher course". :)
Great post. Reminded me that I was thinking of doing a blog swap a while ago.
hahaha you had some awesome lines in there, was cracking me up.
"Nope, not as deliciously distressing as 'Wife Swap', but rather a fun way to share blog readers!"
but once again a really interesting post and read.
Liss
Gee, thanks everyone! Sometimes I think this is just logical stuff we all know - but it's nice to see it all written down in the one place in plain English. Y'all know what you are doing already - but perhaps you are like me and need to focus a little bit?! Not easy, I know! Anyhoo, thanks for reading. I appreciate it!
Hey. Thanks for the advice and great tips. I've been blogging for myself and the few others that read mine from time to time, but I might have to take these tips into consideration. Thanks again!
As a brand new craft blogger I, too, really appreciated this post. I've even done Google searches for articles on how to promote a craft blog and yours (which I came upon by accident) was the most helpful BY FAR. I'll definitely be back here again!
~Sarah
Blog Swap? Hmm that's an intersting idea!
Thanks!

But can't I just hide in my little closet and isolate myself from society?
All true, all good! Thanks for the reminders.
Thanks for the great information. This is my question... Are you taking questions?
How do I get over the nagging thought, 'Does the world need another blog?' I'd hoped blogging would be a way to bring viewers to my website, but can't help feeling like I'm just one in a crowd of millions...literally. Is there a couch somewhere I can lie down on?
Seriously, thanks for the article.
wandered over here from whip it up out of curiousity...love this entry! thanks for sharing...I'm going to check out that shop of yours!
Thanks for putting all of these tips into one post; they're all very helpful for us newbie bloggers.
A blogging friend suggested using Flickr to promote our blogs, and it has helped expand my network of contacts. I get to keep track of when my favorite blogs are updated and also find out about new ones through searches, comments, and groups.
Now if only I could I get the hang of taking great photos and posting regularly and figure out how to make Google Analytics work on my page. Any tips?
Thanks for the great tips! I've been meaning to start craft-blogging for ages, and the marketing part of blogging and selling and all that jazz is the toughest for me.
I'm really enjoying this series! I've had my blog for close to five years, but it's only been a "serious" craft blog for a portion of that time. I took a little break, and am now really trying to make it something that I enjoy doing that people want to read. I love finding tips like this.
I think part of my problem with the analytics is the application/tool I use (Livejournal). I can't add the code to the page itself, but to each entry. Is that the idea?
Oh -- and I have to add for anyone that hasn't tried them yet: Moo Cards ROCK. I'm on my 3d box.
Thanks for all the information. I learned a new word today...Memes. Not that I totally understand what a Meme is but it reminds me of what I use to call my blanket when I was a toddler and sucked my thumb. :)
Thanks for all the great advice about starting a new blog. Love your new banner too!
Hello!! I have started writing my own blog.. it's great fun and very addictive. Thanks for the good advice and excellent information.... Lx
Hello!
I've been a lurker for quite a long time too. I have never commented on any blogs and posts. I am not a writer, and always found others' blogs so inspiring. I found your posts very interesting and they do help me a lot with my blog. I will always find time to read your posts, even though reading blogs is time consuming. Thank you!
I just want to say thank you for sharing all your knowledge, it is just so refreshing and i adore your honesty as well. I am just starting out in the t-shirt design industry and am finding it a little hard just sourcing and gathering information and trustworthy contacts. Someone who is already succeeding in what i would like to be doing wouldnt share there info and knowledge with me with the view of "i hard to do it on my own and work hard and find everything myself, no one handed it to me on a platter". whilst i understood i felt they were a bit selfish and mean, whats wrong with one australian talent helping another succeed, were all human beans!! you have restored my faith, i look forward to sharing my blog when it is up and running.xxx
Well I've been wondering why no one comes to visit my blog. I have to get working on it. Thanks for the tips.
Just goes to show that good advice will always get noticed! Thank you for an interesting and informative post - and reminding me to check Google Analytics...
Jess
Hi there! Thanks for such a great post, I started a blog this year and am loving.it. and getting all inspired and creative (and trying not to fall prey to planning days around blog opportunities as you warned!). This was really helpful- yep I have been a lurker from shyness, and not realising that if I love a comment, other bloggers do too!
Thank you for your tutorials. I appreciate your guidance on this post and "starting a craft blog" and a couple of other posts I have lurked around. Please excuse me I didn't realise I was being rude :)
I will be back when I am ready to try something new; I think flickr will be the next embellishment to add. It is all rather exciting at the moment (and a tinny bit obsessive)
WOW that was riveting...Thanks. I have never heard of Moo cards, I just have my blog address on my business card. Oh and the photo thingy, does this also apply to over 45's, The only time I post a photo of myself is if I have my two gorgeous twin daughters on either side of me, Takes the eyes off me and on to them!!
I am enjoying your blog frequently Thanks
Miriam
I read your entire post, which is a tribute to your content. Thanks for sharing the fun of blogging, as well as being gracious with your experience.
I'm finding this late, but I'm glad nonetheless. Thanks so much for the excellent tips. I'm doing some of them already, but need to tweak things still and your ideas will be a great help.
Thanks Pip. I have just started my own blog and have found all your tips to be incredibly useful!
I just read all of your posts about starting a blog, I've been "dabbling" for a while now, not knowing what to really do. What a help you've been...
Thanks so much!

hey pip!
This is the first time I've ever read about how to successfully market a *craft* blog. How awesome! I'm trying to amp up my blogginess and it's nice to have help. I feel like I'm flailing around sometimes with it. The internet thing doesn't come natural to some, I guess. I just wish we could all get together in person and be crafty. *sigh*
Thanks again!
What a useful post for those starting out.
I especially like the bit about ads. I'm the same and get turned off by blogs when they are just a page full of ads.
Recently I re-worked my blog and have placed my ads in a box. The only ads that are placed are those that I think readers of my blog will click on and fit the content of my blog.
In saying that I was once approached by an American SUV company for an ad and pretty much called them out by asking them if they had read my blog. If they had they would know that I'm passionate about the environment and that my readers are not the type to want to own a SUV. No need to say it, but they didn't get an ad space.
