Hmm... have you been a-lurking about the blog scene for some time? Are you toying with the idea of becoming a blogger yourself? Perhaps you are not sure if you are good enough, smart enough, creative enough, pretty enough, interesting enough?! Stop that.
I'm here to tell you that YOU ARE! Blogging (for me) has been an absolutely life changing (huge call!) experience. It's a great way to meet lovely people, stay inspired, keep positive, have fun, vent and get feedback. Blogging is a wonderful tool for people that love to write. There is nothing like the discipline of sitting down every day to tap tap on the keyboard, to hone your style and keep your enthusiasm ticking. And the great thing about blogging is that there is ALWAYS someone out there just like you - so be true to yourself and write what you want to write!
If you've always harboured a desire to write, if you're an obsessive journal writer, if you love to document your life, if you have skills to share, a business to chat about, if you seek to share your outlook on life, if you are looking for encouragement.... if any of those things are true, then you might just like to write a blog!
For me, blogging is about sharing, writing, looking at lovely pictures, finding out about my community, learning new things and enjoying the feeling of being amongst friends.
Where to Start
Start at Blogger. I know, I'm biased, but I blog with Blogger and I love it. It's free, it's easy to navigate and it usually behaves the way it says it will! You need to sign up for a Google Account to use Blogger - but you can do this by signing up using your usual email address. There is a good tutorial here by Blogger and here from a funny guy with a nice English accent - but you can just search on Youtube for other tutorials on how to set up your blog. Before you start your blogger account - think of a name you'd like to be known by, something that means something to you. Just a few words will do - and hopefully this will be your blog name (if someone else hasn't taken it!). I would recommend that the blog URL that you choose is the same as the display name of your blog, so people can find you easily.
Sometimes someone has already nabbed your most favoured blog name - you can counteract this by adding in hyphens to differentiate your blog from theirs - but really, if your name has been taken, just think of a cuter one - without hyphens or dots is easier for people to remember.
Once you've chosen your Blog name, signed up and completed the set-up process, you need to choose a template. This defines what your blog will look like on screen. You can always change that later as you become more confident with the Blogger software. Blogger displays some different templates on the screen during the set-up process - so just pick the one you most like for the moment.
Start Blogging
Just write. Click 'Start Posting' or 'New Post' and away you go! Blogger formats the html (weird internet language) for you - so you just type away, make your changes, add images, spell check, preview and publish! It really is that easy! I think the hardest thing is knowing what to write! It can take some time to learn to navigate all the posting and set-up and layout tabs in Blogger - but just take your time to click around, watch lots of tutorials and you'll get the hang of it. Practice makes poifect!
How to Upload Pictures
I've found a nice Aussie tutorial on uploading images here. You can upload direct to Blogger from your hard-drive - or you can upload from Flickr as detailed in the tutorial just mentioned (I recommend uploading from Flickr). Set up a Flickr account if you don't already have one. This means you upload images to Flickr first - and then you can copy each individual image into Blogger as you need to.
It's a good way of keeping your photos in one spot, and keeping Blogger running smoothly - the photos should load more quickly and you won't be using up all your Blogger image allowance (I'm up to 30% on mine after only 18 months or so). It also means you won't have to delete images after a couple of years of blogging. This is great if you are like me and post WAY too many images!
Customising the Look of Your Blog
There is a good tute here - you can play around and add stuff to your blog to your hearts desire. Probably the first thing you will want to add is your very own Blogroll ( a list of links to your favourite blogs). Blogger will automatically show your profile and your blog archive.
Adding 'page elements' is a great way to make your blog look different to other blogs. Be sure to customise it so that it reflects just what you are all about!
The Most Important Things About Blogging - According to me!
Your content - Write about things you really care about. Be sure you are honest and have some integrity. Don't be a wanker. Don't pretend to be someone you aren't. Don't be pretentious. I promise people will like you just the way you are. And don't reveal TOO much about yourself - your privacy is important - have a think about what you feel comfortable with. As a rough rule, don't reveal where you live, your full name or location-specific details about your kids.
Always proof read and spell check your posts - even the most poignant, funny or clever writing is let down by typos. Once you have clicked the publish button - go and have a look at what you have published. Double check for extra line-breaks or wonky formatting and fix it straight away. NO ONE likes a sloppy blog.
Your images - beautiful images make a blog. Crap ones will turn people away in droves. First impressions count. Brush up on your photography skills. If your photos aren't up to scratch you can fake it by editing them later on a site such as Picnik. Tote your camera with you wherever you go - but beware the 'living for blogging' syndrome which involves planning your day around good Blogger photo opportunities. That is just silly. If using other people's images always ask them first - and always credit images sourced from elsewhere.
Updating - no point having a blog that you only update once a month. Update often. Sometimes just a photo is enough, as long as it means something to you. If you're having a crappy day and can't think of what to write, then trawl the EXPLORE pages on Flickr and post something that makes you feel a bit more chipper.
Commenting - the best way to let people know you are out there is by commenting (thoughtfully, not just jumping up and down saying 'look at me') on other blogs. If someone is religiously commenting on your blog - return the favour - don't be an aloof-no-commenting-blogging-princess (or prince) - we're all equal in blog land and it's nice to know who is reading! Remember, bloggers are people too.
Reading - don't fall into the trap of skimming over other people's blogs and commenting in 3 words. It's so much nicer to read a few blogs properly, as opposed to becoming an image junkie and leaving super-quick dumb comments on zillions of blogs. Be a good Blog-buddy. Meaningful comments are just as important as a great blog post.
Linking - if you love someone else's blog - link to them whenever it's relevant. Put them on your blogroll. Not only will it help drive traffic to their blog (which YOU LOVE) - it'll help your readers get a better grasp of who you are and what you like. Also - if someone is supporting YOU or what you do - in any way, shape or form - then it is nice manners to link to them.
Lurking - bloggers give lurkers (people that visit your blog without commenting) a hard time - but remember that your lurkers may be your most avid readers. They may just be little word-shy or perhaps they are not sure how to use the Blogger commenting function. Or they may just like lurking. It's okay, as long as they keep popping in. Learn to love your lurkers!
Other Cool Blogging Stuff
Flickr - the butter to Blogger's bread.
Bighugelabs.com - a great site for manipulating images you have uploaded to Flickr into cool collages which you can cut and paste into your blog - please note that some people have trouble using bighugelabs mosaic maker - let me know if you are struggling and I'll do my best to troubleshoot for you!
Picnik.com - aforementioned free photo editor - upload to Flickr first and then edit in Picnik
Google Analytics - for tracking how many people visit your blog, where they came from, how long they stay and what they look at
Technorati - for tracking who is linking to YOUR blog
Bloglines and Google Reader - you just add the URLs of your favourite blogs and you can view them all from one website! Beware.. this can be a HUGE suck on your time - it's so easy to add hundreds of blogs - so be selective and delete the ones you always skim over as time goes on. Always click over to the posts you love and comment.
Feedburner - for adding a subscribe button to your blog - readers get it in their inbox whenever you update
Mixwit - for adding mixtapes to your blog - just for fun
I hope this helps! If you've got any queries about newbie blogging, I'd love to help! Don't be shy! Anyone can comment on my blog - even anonymously! You don't need to be a Blogger member.
edit - there is a tutorial here which covers how to set up Google Analytics for Blogger!
edit again - i also wrote a tute on 'how to market your craft blog' - find it here
xx Mikes

Oh Pip, you make it sound so easy! Even after lurking (ok, I did post one comment) all weekend, I am still scared I wouldn't be able to have enough 'content'.
ReplyDeleteKerry
Pip , that is a great post !
ReplyDeleteThankyou Jodie!
ReplyDeleteKerry - a post every 3 days is enough, unless you are a maniac like me! Remember that sometimes an image speaks a thousand words - I think you'll find it easy! And I am happy to help! So just ask!
xx pip
Great post Pip-a-roo!!
ReplyDeleteI personally prefer Typepad for blogging but unfortunately it's not free.
Yep.. I hear you Nikkishell! Lots of my favourite blogs are on typepad. I know nothing about typepad in fact! But I know I like a lot of typepad blogs! So hurrah for typepad too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for such a thoughtful post. I especially love the bit about being yourself - sometimes that's the hardest thing to do in front of an audience that you may never meet. Thanks also for the super links - have never made a mosaic so I'm off to experiment with that....
ReplyDeleteWow Pip, that was a fantastic post. Thanks for all the great links. I often look at things and have no idea how they are done.....I know what I'm going to be up to this week now!
ReplyDeleteThank you Pip for all this information! I especially appreciate the "how to behave" rules; as a new blogger I have had to figure it out and sometimes I got it wrong.
ReplyDeleteyay get a blogging!!
ReplyDeletexoxx
I'm with the typewriter love too
Hi Pip. I have been enjoying your blog for AGES but have never posted a comment - I guess that makes me a lurker - what a dreadful tag! I just figure you are so busy writing all those posts and reading all of those comments - why waste your time with my opinion! I promise to try harder! -BettyFox-
ReplyDeleteGreat post Pip. I blog on my own website and recently updated all my backend software. This stopped all old rss feed working and I've lost all my subscribers. I hope if any of you are out there you'll go to my site and add me again... it's so lonely at the moment :-)
ReplyDeleteThats such a helpful post, lots of handy hints, thanks!
ReplyDeleteOooh these are great tips! Thanks for this!
ReplyDeletePip - you are so generous. Great post!
ReplyDeleteWow Pip - you read my mind!!! I'm in the midst of researching all this and was just tripping about in blogland checking out the formats of my favourite blogs... THANK YOU for all this info!! you're a truly generous gal!
ReplyDeleteI'm new to blogging and loving it as well :) Appreciate the tips, thanks!
ReplyDeleteAmazing, everything I wanted to know and a million times clearer than google will ever be! Thanks heaps for sharing and for having the worlds most beautiful shop as well as a super helpful blog. I'm a newbie and this but hopefully my wee blog will get a bit jazzed up now I have some tricks up my sleeve. Thanks Again.
ReplyDeleteI did it! Thanks to you I started my blog. I lurked around this and other blogs for weeks and was waiting for something in me to go PING! But I just went for it. Thank you
ReplyDeletePip, I wonder if you do a follow up can you cover how to get a 'meme' going... I've had this idea.. you know how people do Flashback Friday and Mosaic Monday and such... I want to start Ticked-Off Tuesday, for people to get stuff off their chests. Any ideas?
ReplyDeletecan I make a shout out for Wordpress? I use them for my blogging and LOVE it. I started with blogger and then moved. I feel I have much more control and the cpanel is super easy to navigate.
ReplyDeleteI found this so helpful! i just recently started a blog and i really like it so far. i find that it is difficult to find readers though. how did you get your blog known?
ReplyDeleteWhat an informative and helpful post! Thank you! I've added it to my delicious list. I've been blogging since 2003, but I didn't know about most of the sites you listed. I'd like to work on making my photos better - I really admire yours.
ReplyDelete-katie.
Fantastic post, Pip! And great links - where has Picnik been all of my life?!
ReplyDeleteWow, this post is great - you've really covered everything here and it's all very relevant. Attitudes and mindset behind blogging can vary depending on the day or even the weather, so it's good that you've addressed so many of the issues we sometimes address as we blog along merrily.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all of the links too. I haven't used Flickr (and not sure when I'll check it out... maybe one day). And I didn't know about the image size limit...
Thank you so much for this post! Starting a blog is on my list of things to do when life settles down a bit--and I appreciate all the tips.
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful post. I use flickr, but didn't realise the benefits of using it to upload images onto my blog. And so many other useful tips - thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteRobyn
Hi Pip,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your very comprehensive post about blogging. I've been blogging for a year but there was heaps of stuff there I didn't know about. Well done. I've just spent the last hour on technorati as I didn't know what it was about. Great tip, thanks again.
Thank you for telling people to link to other blogs. It drives me insane to see a blogger write how it's ok for someone to link to them, as if they need to grant permission. No, actually they don't. It's not ok to steal their content or photos but you can link all you want to other blogs. And, if you come across a fabulous blog, project, tutorial, photo, etc., thanks to another blog, and you then mention it on your own blog, you really should give credit to the blog or site you first discovered it on. (Oh boy. I feel like the blog police right now. Sorry!)
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU Pip. I have been agonising about starting my crafty blog but after reading your post I am feeling much more confident. Will get cracking on the blog!! XX
ReplyDeleteYou are such a community builder Pip. The crafty community would be a lesser place without your presence.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Cathy
I do have one question Pip. How do you find out about your blogger image allowance and how much you have used. I had no idea about this. Does it mean that eventually you will ultimately run out of space to post photos?
ReplyDeleteThanks. Cathy
I've just started my own blog and this is great info for me - thank you so much! :)
ReplyDeleteAli
You just inspired me to start leaving comments! I never know what to say. Thanks to you, I am going to try extra hard to think of something, even if its plain dull.
ReplyDeleteOh. By the way, you should know I've been lurking you for a while. Sorry about that.
Just to add that first time bloggers might also like to check out wordpress.com which offers a similar free blogging service to Blogger with the advantage of really excellent support and forums, as well as some much more stylish templates than Blogger.
ReplyDeleteI feel slightly guilty now for being a lurker and using an RSS feed to read most of the blogs I like. It does allow me to scan my blogs until I find something I've been interested/curious about. Like the Whip-up post about your "How to Start a Craft Blog" Post. I've tried to start blog's before and not succeeded in continuous updates.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, it's really helpful!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info, you've revealed some blog terms and info that have often baffled me.
ReplyDeleteAny chance you could do a tute on how to make a personalized banner? Some people change them so often, I'm hoping it isn't too difficult.
Can't wait to try making a mixed tape, what an amazing creature this whole 'internet' thing has become!
Even though I've had a blog for 2 years, I got some good info from your post! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteFantastic post! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI've just found the Bighuglabs today!! I will explore all your links and the other tutorial.
Thank you again.
(My main difficulty is to express myself in English in the comments: I have to be short...)
this is a great post - it's nice to have all those links and tips in one place. And, thanks for the comment about 'love your lurkers!' I lurk all the time and rarely post because I don't want to make a meaningless comment just to make a comment, ya know?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for all the info.
ReplyDeleteDo you know of a type of counter (like in Ebay) that could tell if people are lurking around your Blog and just not commenting?
Thanks again.
Oh! this post is awesome!
ReplyDeleteMy quilting blog has been neglected and uninspired lately, partially because that's how I have been feeling. I do love my lurkers and everybody that comments, but sometimes I feel it's so hard to keep track and keep up. I also fall into the category of bloggers who doesn't want to post unless I have an amazing photo. Hmph, I guess I should get over that, find inspiration, or just start writing again.
Thanks for the nudge.
Well, I'd like you to know I've done it. I've started my own blog. It's small now but I figure it will grow over the next few months and I can use it as a way to track my creative musings. I put a link to your blog in my first entry so others can be inspired - hope that's alright.
ReplyDeletecheers!
sooo helpful and real, thank you thank you for making me feel part of the group ( of millions!)
ReplyDeleteHi Pip - great article - I didn't know that Blogger had an image limit - where do I find that out on my blogger account? I seem to being a bit dim and I can't find it ;-) Thanks
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the help! Off to check out the links you so generously provided!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the cool tips. I have been trying to start my blog and keep it going for a while. Your tips have inspired me to keep blogging THANKS!!
ReplyDeleteI visit meet me at mikes for daily inspiration and thanks to your post about setting up a blog am about to launch into the blogosphere, I plan to get it happening in the school holidays 2 sleeps away I'll post a link when its up! thanks so much for a lovely place to play
ReplyDeleteThis is such a wonderful post. I'm brand new to blogging but have been lurking for two years. I never left comments before as I thought you needed to be a blogger to leave them. This post is great for us new-timers, because it seems such a daunting process that is made evermore clearer with your helpful tips and thoughful insight...thanks so much for writing this :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the tips. I just started my blog today. I've been reading/lurking your blog for ages now and checked back today and noticed all your wonderful tips. You have a gorgeous blog, I love the Australiana theme you had a while back, although the whole blog rocks. Cheers :)
ReplyDeletegreat advice, i think i've got a few improvements to make...i need to brush up on some html too and get a unique format going. hmm...
ReplyDeletethanks!
Hay pip, I'm a dedicated lurker and really appreciate your tips, they may just provide the inspiration I need to start my own blog, been lurking for about 12 months after finding craft blogs via the book, "The Crafter's Companion". I'm totally addicted to craft and use my fave blogs for inspiration, it seems very time consuming to actually post, no?
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your expertise. I'm feeling like anonymous above who said they're scared they don't have enough content. I'am stuck wondering what about my life would be interesting enough to share. You've given me confidence that I can think of something, sooner or later :)
ReplyDeleteThis post has given me the push I needed to start my own blog and stop being such a silent reader : ) Thankyou so much!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this information. It's given me the push I needed to start my own blog today. Baby steps right now but it's all good.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great post Pip! I have been putting off starting a blog, I've been collecting my photos, ideas etc and you have given me the push I needed! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Pip, Love your blog and you have inspired me to take the plunge, wish me luck! Jess xx
ReplyDeletePip, what a great tutorial. I read it and immediately started my own blog! You made it sound easy and it actually was. Thanks for all the tips.
ReplyDeleteHi Pip,
ReplyDeletethankyou for your very useful post...you made it seem so easy..so off I went and started blogging !
Just one question, how do you get ssuch long posts ? Blogger only lets me have 500 charcters then I run out of space on the post ??
Keep up the inspirational work !
guilty lurker confessing here.
ReplyDeleteThanks Pip, you have been a great help and source of insperation for me. I love your book too, well done :-)
ReplyDeletePip your blog is soooo great. I am lapping up the info and crafty goodness like there is no tomorrow. No wonder you have such a huge following. I haven't had my first blog birthday yet so I guess I'm still a newbie but I just wanted to say I appreciate all your info and advice. Thanks so much for enlightening the rest of us!
ReplyDeleteKris
Pip, I love to sew and do crafts, I did'nt know there were so many other crafters out there till I discovered blogs. I am new to reading blogs and I just love to peruse them and learn so many new things. I didn't know that I was offending anyone by not leaving a comment. MY apologies. I am learning new things everyday! Thanks for all the wonderful and helpful info.
ReplyDeleteHi Pip,
ReplyDeleteJust read Sandy's comments and what she said, could be me. I am also new to blogging and have been enjoying looking at other peoples blogs, I had no idea it was rude not to leave a comment. I am blown away by the amazing talent, ideas and information that is available. Thanks for your great advice, I hope to be able to improve my poor little blog.
hi, i've been a lurker for quiet sometime. i love your blog and do you know that you're a great blogger? i just started a blog 3days ago and this advice is really helpful for me. thanx alot. truly appreciated=D
ReplyDeleteYep another guilty lurker here. I actually didn't realise that it was bad 'netiquitte' to not comment. Thanks for your inspiring words..you have opened up my eyes.
ReplyDeletePip, thanks so much for such and informative and inspirational post. It was just what I needed!
ReplyDeleteOooh - i learnt something!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips - i only recently discovered blogging and am the same as above comments - never knew so many people out there had the same crafting love - and blogged about it! I may even be inspired to start one....maybe.
D
I think your post was just the encouragement I needed to dip my toe in the water... Thank you, for your generosity of spirit. Your blog is wonderful and so buoyant and encouraging.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your help on starting my blog! I have been wanting to do this for awhile but I had no idea how!! I still have a lot to learn!!! Thanks soooo much!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips and advice off to find some widgets :)
ReplyDeleteWow Pip! What a great post! I'm new to the blogging scene and you really helped me understand a lot of things. Thanks a bunch.
ReplyDeleteMedhaxx
Entering the world of blogland is certainly a learning curve. Thank you for you time in putting this together. It was the uploading images to Flickr and then to the blog that gave me my lightbulb moment.
ReplyDeleteCheers.
this is an awesome resource. I sure wish I'd seen it before I started mine. And thanks for the tip about Google Analytics, I've just signed up, and Technorati is next. I'll be sending the link to this post to anyone who asks me how to start their own blog!
ReplyDeleteThank you Pip. With all your warm and encouraging words to cheer me on I might just get brave enough to stop watching and start doing. And if I do, your post will be a great place to start.
ReplyDeleteTechnorati is making me feel completely lost! There is so much info I don't know how to start. I've set up and verified my account...but I'm trying to start by adding you as a favorite and going from there. I can't figure it out!
ReplyDeleteCan you do a post on Technorati how-to?? that would be super helpful...like all your blogging advice posts which have been super helpful for me as I have started mine. thanks for all your help!
J
Gosh, I've been wondering how to set up a blog for ages, and have just found this wonderful tutorial. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest obstacle is thinking of a name to blog under - but as soon as I can, I'll be blogging.
Thanks Pip, I've been lurking for quite a while now and always felt guilty entering comps but not having a blog to link them to. At the same time, I was scared witless...what if I did it wrong?...what if I have nothing to say?...what if no-one is interested and I get no visitors???? Well, whilst playing around with blog names on the weekend I went a bit too far and pressed the final button and now I'm a published blogger (and quite chuffed about it!!)
ReplyDeleteI've revisited your blog tute many times for ideas and hints and everything you said was sooooo useful...thank you thank you thank you!!!! I'm planning to work my way through your list of sites to visit and just 'play'!
thanks so much again...forever grateful
;o) Wendy B
Thanks Pip! I finally started a craft blog from your tutorial! I have 3 posts so far..... Hopefully, I can keep up with it now. I didn't realize I was a lurker until I read your post - so here's my first comment. Thanks a bunch!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips! I just started my own craft blog a couple of weeks ago, this info will come in very handy! x
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your tips, Pip. I have been toying with the idea of starting a blog and your page has helped to give me some perspective. It's nice to click on a page that gives sound, constructive advice rather than just asking you to buy an online guide with all the answers! I shall return!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for this post! It was the kick in the pants I needed to start up my crochet blog, Rock Dove Planet. I can definitely see myself referring back to this post whenever I need some blogging mojo.
ReplyDeleteYou've inspired me to enter in the blog world! Thanks for the ideas :)
ReplyDeleteI created a blog about 2 months ago. I was ready to start with tons of inspiration and motivation, which is usually a good thing. Sadly I haven't posted anything yet, but not because I didn’t have anything to post. I haven’t posted anything yet because of self-doubt. Your post really helped me to try and get back on track. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you for such a detailed post! I'm just starting a blog now, and it's so nice to learn the etiquette before I blunder in.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great post, we are in the process of developing a blog for our new business and its nice to know people will probably like us no matter waht. Unless our photos are bad, lol.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips and great ideas! I have a personal blog that I add all my craft stuff on but it would be nice to start a new blog. I like the tip of using flicker to add photos to the blog very helpful.
ReplyDeleteI am a newbie, for sure.... And your tips have been so helpful (and encouraging!). I know you posted this years ago, but thought you might want to know it's STILL helping us rookies out! :) Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteWow! This was so helpful and inspiring, I've only just recently considered blogging, as in today recently! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the helpful hints and links to other tutorials in this blog. I've been toying with the idea for several months but have no idea how to even start...so you've given me somewhere to start and I THANK you!! Hopefully I will be up and running soon and can link you! :)
ReplyDelete
