It's Nice Manners to Comment
I am sure, like me, that some days you race through your favourite blogs like greased lightning. You've quickly noted that Blogger Esmerelda has announced her baby, that Blogger Betty has made a super good paper mache bowl and that Blogger Mabel is considering throwing herself off her shed roof. You were going to go back and comment later, posting some congratulatory/classy/conciliatory thoughts, after you've finished the washing and plucked your eyebrows.. but somehow you got stuck watching Martha and it all went awry.
I know it's really hard to find time to comment - and I think it's absolutely okay if you don't comment all the time - but perhaps you could just comment weekly on your favourites? Weekly is not too much, is it? Some blogs don't really NEED a lot of comments - they are checking their stats and they know that they have readers bookmarking them from Brazil to Boneo... but some lovely little blogs need a lot of love. So give it up when you can.
I do go on about thoughtful comments, but I'm talking quality rather than quantity. I'm sure you can do quick and thoughtful... because you're crafty and clever, aren't you?
If someone comments on your blog - it's up to you whether you comment back or not. It depends how many comments you get, and how much time you have. If you are super busy, you might consider putting a little note in your sidebar saying something like 'I appreciate and read all my comments, but I might not have time to comment back all the time, be sure to leave me your link so I can visit you sometime too!'. You should decide what's best for you. If someone asks a direct question in your comments - endeavour to respond.
A little tip for Blogger users - be sure your comments are set to POP-UP BOX - then you can stay on the same page of your blog, just scrolling through the posts and replying to your comments superquick! Go to SETTINGS then COMMENTS then scroll down a wee bit and say yes to POP UP WINDOW.
It's Nice Manners to Be Polite
Remember what your Nanna told you? If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. Or say something short and sweet and diplomatic. Remember what a blog is? - someone's online diary. It's all about them. And perhaps they are really different to you. Which is okay. Unless they openly ask for constructive criticism - and even then I'd be a bit careful about inciting a riot! - perhaps keep your narky comments to yourself.
On the other hand some blogs really encourage healthy debate. You will be able to tell from the tone of other comments whether you can post a bit of a comment smackdown on someones blog. Personally, i like to keep it positive, but you might like nothing better than to get on a soapbox. Most craft blogs are not the forum for this kind of chatter though - so think carefully before you start throwing punches.
Just because someone might write their personal blog in a cynical tone, it doesn't mean it's open slather for dark comments or criticism - leave that to their Mothers. Some of these bloggers are using their blog to have a healthy (public) vent, others are seeking acknowledgement that there is someone out there just like them and some bloggers just have a great grasp of black humour. All deserve your utmost respect. Always treat them like people in the real world. Keep it nice. If a blog really grates on you - DON'T GO THERE! Just click away. Easy.
It's Nice Manners to Introduce Yourself
I don't mind if people comment anonymously - when it's a nice comment. But I really object to negative anonymous comments, and so should you. If you are 'anonymously' commenting on a blog because you don't have a user profile or web url - then you should sign your name in the comment text box. If you are leaving a negative comment - ask yourself if it's really necessary. Would you write the exact same comment in a personal email to the blogger in question? Would you happily sign your name? I personally can't think of any reason to leave a negative comment on a craft blog. Bloggers blog for the love of it, to share and to express. Don't say stuff that will hurt their feelings. Just click away.
What To Do If You Get A Nasty Comment
Delete it. Why let some one yick make your blog a yick place too? Just delete anything that upsets you - it's YOUR place - don't let someone come in and wipe their muddy shoes over you nice place. Quietly usher them out with a minimum of fuss and don't give 'em another thought. Don't draw attention to it. Remember your lovely manners. You can't help it if SOME people were raised in a box of smelly socks, can you. And maybe they can't either, so raise one eybrow and move on. You might like to think about turning on 'comment moderation' if you are concerned about negative commenters (or spammers).
It's Nice Manners to Introduce Your Friends
Blogging is all about sharing, linking, inspiring, discovering... the 'ings 'go on and on! But if you aren't bothering to link to your friends and favourites, your blog could soon become a quiet place. There is no reason not to link to the blogs that you love, or the blogs of people you love. You don't have to ask permission to link to someone else (but it is nice manners to ask permission to use other bloggers images - unless they are public photos on Flickr and you credit the source). So link to your hearts desire - and let your readers know who you like! Be proud of the blogs you love - and don't feel you'll be judged on who's in your blogroll - because those who judge are not worth worrying about, are they?
If you are not on someone's blog roll - and you want to be - don't ask them. Really. I know you think it's important to be on their list - but they'll put you there if they want to. They might have rules for who they link to, or some crafty strategy - don't let it bug you. Just enjoy reading their blog. If you REALLY want to be friends, then spend lots of happy, fun time on the blog in question. Perhaps someday they'll see just how great you are. Perhaps they already know how great you are, and just can't be bothered ever updating their blog roll. Or perhaps it will become less important to you, that whole list thing.
It's Nice Manners to Be Inclusive
It's Nice Manners to Be Inclusive
Some bloggers just hang about the 'big' busy, well-known blogs commenting their butts off and hoping that they get noticed. But remember that as great as those big blogging crafty peeps are - they started somewhere less big - so take an inspiration trip and go look at some of the smaller crafty blogs too. There are some absolute GEMS out there - more than we'll ever know, i suspect - if you find one you love, comment freely and nicely and be sure to link to them and share their goodness around a bit! DON'T keep your favourites a secret - because if no one visits, then your favourite blog might just go up in a cloud of 'no-one-wants-to-read-my-blog' smoke. And then you don't have a secret to keep (and you've lost a wonderful source of inspiration) and someone's feeling sad & unpopular too. No winners there.
It's Nice Manners to Care
If you find a blogger mumbling something teary about having a hard time. Say something. Send them your support. Even if you don't visit their blog often. Even if it's not one of your favourites. It can be short and sweet - but sending one teeny comment might make a big difference. The online community should be no different to the real world. Take the time to care about someone when they need it.
It's Nice Manners to Share
Other Ways of Sharing The Blogging Love:
Did you see something on someone's blog that knocked your crafty socks off? Write a little blurb about it on your blog - and link to them.
Is there someone in the blogging community that has helped you out with something, supported you in someway, perhaps constantly shops in your etsy store or constantly inspires you from afar? You might want to link to them! Because it's a nice thing to support those that support you.
Did you just notice that one of your bloggy friends uploaded a gorgeous photo to Flickr? If the photo is set to public, you can blog it directly from Flickr - just click on the photo and hit the BLOG THIS button above it - Flickr will take you through the process of linking your blog to Flickr and in a matter of seconds you can blog any public photo you like. And Flickr will automatically link back to the photo's original source - so your friend can take the credit.
You could also create a mosaic of images from your favourite Flickr-using bloggers - Big Huge Labs Mosaics link the images back to their sources for you - so you are sending lots of visitors to your favourite bloggers by doing this. Which is nice, huh?
Add a Reader Widget to Your Blog! This is a great way of having a blogroll that constantly changes. It'll update regularly, as your Google Reader or Bloglines reader does, and show excerpts of posts from your favourite blogs. It gives everyone a turn on your blog! Freshest at the top is best - as your readers are getting lovely fresh news from YOUR favourites - and of course you want to support them by sending them your readers, don't you?! On Blogger this is a new standard Page Element - for other Blogging Software Google 'Bloglines Widget' or 'Google Reader Widget'
Make Suggestions - if you've found a blog you just KNOW one of your blogging circle will love - send them a little email, with a link and your best wishes. They may never find it without you.. what with all those zillions of pages out there!
Thank you... and goodnight.
xx Mikes
Fabulous, fabulous post, think i will come back and read it a few times so it all sinks in. Well said!!
ReplyDeletealicia ~ time worn style
Thank you for all these great posts on blogging, Pip! This one was my favourite. Nothing like a bit of common courtesy these days!
ReplyDeleteDang it all Pip, I just commented and then it disappeared into the ether. Most mysterious. Just wanted to say that you've prompted me to clean up my act and comment more often.
ReplyDeletexx
You're a treasure, Pip. Great, gracious advice from your generous heart.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog pip, you're always so thoughtful, inspiring and positive. I'm living in London missing home and reading your blog always makes me feel way better and brightens my day. Thanks heaps!
ReplyDeleteMatilda
Ohh.. sorry Nan! Darn those internet gremlins! Nikki you are most treasurely yourself! Matilda... we miss you - and we don't even know you.. but look how nice you seem!
ReplyDeletemichelle - thanks for taking the time to trawl through these hefty posts! And Alicia... thanks for being so studious - straight to the top o the blog class for you!
ReplyDeleteGreat bloggy advice, Pip! xx
ReplyDeleteLovely post, Pip. Your crafty blog posts must take you ages to write. I think this one is my fave too... a nice reminder not be so rushed when going through bloglines. You know, I think I comment less since I started subscribing to blogs. Time to change! :o)
ReplyDeleteHi Pip, thanks for another fantastically inspiring post. I love to leave nice bloggy comments (as most people have probably realised by now) and I love discovering new blogs. I am going to endeavour to share more new blogs when I find them because I some sometimes forget that bit, and I also forget to update my blogroll (bad blogger)!
ReplyDeleteAnother great post Pip! You're really good!
ReplyDeleteThanks a bunchy Birdy and Curly and Shezza and Kirst! I'm going to be trying harder to reply to comments from now on too!
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic series of posts Pip - and lovely to see one about lovely manners! You've inspired me to reduce my bloglines subscriptions and really take the time to read and comment properly. Quality, not quantity! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Pip,
ReplyDeleteI was just popping over to your blog to say 'Thank you!' for putting me in your Fresh Links list and I see your big post about saying thank you. So now I feel slightly embarrassed for not doing it sooner.
Your blog tutorials are fabulous. I only started at the beginning of the year so I'm a total novice on some of the blog etiquette. Can you tell me, do people who have left a comment always check back on that post to see if the author has left them a response? As an author I'm never sure if I am meant to respond on the post or got to their blog and comment or email them.
I'll get all this blog stuff worked out eventually. :)
Cheers,
Paisley
BTW my softie is being very temperamental, not sure if I will make it in time.
Pip-
ReplyDeleteI am loving this series of posts! Thank you for taking the time to write them.
xoxo
Ooooh its so true. I know my friends are reading my blog but comments would be really great.
ReplyDeleteI might link this post in my blog if you dont mind. It might encourage people to be more supportive.
Thanks.
Thank you for taking the time to share a helpful 'how to'. Certainly lots has changed since I began in '05 but it is great to be challenged to keep up with current new things as well as to be reminded of good old fashioned good manners.
ReplyDeleteStill learning.......
I wish I had had these posts to read five months ago when I started reading blogs and writing my own. But it is never too late to learn good manners and useful things! Thank you, Pip, for writing so much about blogging.
ReplyDeletewell said, pipster! i just love this series and the generous spirit fueling all that you do. bravo!
ReplyDeletexoxoxo
In the spirit of your post, hi I'm Strikethru, and thanks for linking to my typewriter blog :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to browsing your blog. I also love crafts! Fun.
Oh my! Thank you Lara and Jessie and Kirtida! I bet you could tell me some stuff about blogging, Miss Ozjane!
ReplyDeletePaisley - reply in YOUR comments - and people can come to you for your reply - some blog software actually lets you respond via email to your commenter, but I think it's good to have your answers public.
Ulla - just do your best and be your nicest and your blog will be super good!
Sosser - you are so nice and shiny, aren't you?!
Strikethru - what a gorgeous blog oyou have! Thanks for the introduction! Pleased ta meet ya!
Sensational post. If I was still inclined to blog I'd be referring to this regularly. I really admire people like you who have the energy, enthusiasm, commitment - and talent - to keep doing this!
ReplyDeleteHi, I must admit I am a lurker. I love reading quite a few blogs daily, but only being new to the blogging world I almost felt intimidated to comment, don't know why - but thanks - for no more I shall be sharing the love with those that brighten my day. So in that vein thanks for all the great visual imagery everyday and of course the witty comment and great information.
ReplyDeletePip, thank you for this fantastic post. Blog-etiquette is really all about nice manners. I try and comment, and do get a little worried I'm talking to myself at times, but really love this - I'll read it a few times more methinks. J
ReplyDeleteOh no! Gasp I'm a 'lurker' as well! Suddenly I feel like I should be wearing a long raincoat ... I haven't commented because I am a mere reader and not a blogger, I didn't know whether I should... but I do read your blog CONSTANTLY and I love it, and yours and a few others have definitely got me through a few lonely times home alone with baby! So thanks and more thanks for being wonderful you.
ReplyDeleteHi Pip, I've really enjoyed these blogging posts. Thanks for writing them. :-)
ReplyDeleteLiss x
Oh Lazy Cow - thanks for your nice words, I love lazy cows, also lazy lambs and lazy lizards. Keep up the good lazing!
ReplyDeleteCindy and Ephemeral - I LOVE MY LURKERS. I really do. You don't have to comment on my blog - I can see my visitors when i look at my stats software. So feel free to lurk and rest assured i know you are there and I'm super happy you even bothered to click over!
Just Jess - thanks a bunchy for reading, and commenting, and just being Just Jess!
Liss-Daydream-Lily - its so nice to have you visiting my blog again! Remember how much fun we used to have at Stitching Nights?! Much cupcake goodness!
I've totally enjoyed these 'how to' posts. Even though I don't make to sell, I do 'make' from time to time as a creative outlet, so I have gotten a lot out of these helpful tips.
ReplyDeleteOn the 'nice manners' theory, you're right on - a little bit of net-etiquette goes a long way. Just like when you're having a crappy day and you pass a complete stranger who just happens to catch your eye, and just smiles. That's all it takes sometimes.
Thank you so much for taking such time and effort to tell us about the art of the blogging - it is very appreciated and inspired me to take the plunge. You have a wonderful blog - I discovered it only recently. I was so excited to show my mother-in-law the Figgjo - wow - and the pyrex bowls all grouped in the various colours, just gorgeous - thanks again.
ReplyDeleteDanielle
You are the loveliest, sweetest , bestest person there ever was.
ReplyDeleteThanks for another great post - these are reminding me of how nice the online crafty community is and encouraging me to get my act together and start my blog again... although it's not happening just yet!
ReplyDeleteAlso I want to take more time to leave more thoughtful comments, and, though it pains me, have been weeding my bloglines subscriptions down to just the blogs I really want to read and keep up with, and thus can have more time to comment!
Hey Jenaveve - thank you! I like to be helpful. And i like smiling strangers, unless they are smiling weirdly whilst following me!
ReplyDeleteDanielle - I love Figgjo and Pyrex sooooo much. Lots of other people seem to love them too! I just wish i had some PINK pyrex in my collection!
Jess Teddy Bear Gal - NUP, you are the sweetest. No returns.
Emma - it's so hard to reduce your subscriptions, isn't it. I have HEAPS - but i sort of sort them into special favourites and next favourites, and then be sure to comment on my specials as often as possible. But even I lapse. So don't be too hard on yourself if you lapse. I like lapsers. And lurkers.
Thank you so much for these helpful ideas. I have made a few changes already and will be doing alot to make my blog and blogging more friendly.
ReplyDeleteBec
Pip, these 'How to' posts are just fantastic - I like the way you view the world (real world and blog world included...and as you said, both are inhabited by real people, so they're really not that different....sorry, I just said 'real' and 'really' way to many times didn't I?). Anyway, thank-you for the constant source of inspiration. I always come away from your blog feeling recharged and inspired to be a better crafter and blogger :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not blogging much lately..ok not at all really. Someone left a comment that disheartened me and I abandoned ship. But...instead I'll take your advice and figure out how to delete the darn flippin' comment. Thanks. Anyway..I'm only commenting because you asked. I always send you good vibes even though we're total strangers. Thanks for the always good stuff. ~Elaine
ReplyDeleteYou should get an award for the loveliest manners of them all Pip. I am really enjoying these 'how to' posts.
ReplyDeleteThis was a good read Pip, and you're so right about leaving a comment on a blog if someone is having a bad day...when I've been pretty low, some nice words from Bloggy peeps really do help.
ReplyDeleteReally good stuff. I love to visit your blog, I know there's always going to be something nice and inspirational to read or look at - thankyou!!
ReplyDeleteSome amazing suggestions, thank you! I've stopped lurking and started commenting after your last post on the topic, and made some new acquaintences already! Also, I'm having so much fun making mosaics. Thank you!
ReplyDelete-katie.
Bec and Bec.. thank you! Do you know each other?! You should, you seem to be like minded... you can say you met at Mikes!
ReplyDeleteElaine - don't be disheartened, why just the other day i got a negative comment on my blog - it happens to us all at one time or another - just delete 'em. It's YOUR place. So get rid of anyone who doesn't play nice.
Big Cat and Drewzel - thank you for your kind words! I think you both have really good blogs - and I know you put heaps of time and love into 'em, like I do! Thanks for visiting my blog. I appreciate it.
Hello Victoria! You are Dear Meagan! So pleased to meet you! Who is Meagan, I wonder, if you are Victoria? I'll go and find out, I think!
Fabulous series Pip. I like this one in particular! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteOutstanding my dear. HOpefully my small little blog will get some love .... Thanks for mentioning the small less frequently travelled blogs. I love to know what people think.
ReplyDeleteGreat post

It is really great that you took the time to write on this subject. It is such a rewarding process to start a blog but sometimes the pond for a little fish can seem like a limiteless ocean. Thankyou for your thoughtful and well thought out words. Much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteGreat advice!
ReplyDeletesuch a thoughtful and well written post. thanks so muchly. a great read (as always)
ReplyDeleteThanks again for all the great info. I liked your series so much that I blogged about it and linked to your posts. I hope that was okay. Great advice and very thoughtfully done.
ReplyDeleteI just starting reading you blog this week and I'm amazed how often you post and how thoughtful the posts are - you're doing an awesome job! thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Nicole! Thanks for visiting my little corner of the internet!
ReplyDeleteShellbells - the little blogs are some of my very favourites - so just have fun writing and enjoy your lurkers too!
Julie - it was my pleasure to write about blogging and blog manners, because I've seen some bad manners on show of late... and i think it's much nicer to be polite, don't you?!
Fuji-mama - welcome to my blog, so pleased to meet you!
Rigel! How ARE you? So good to see you and thanks for the nice compliments!
Thankyou Sue for linking to me! I appreciate it! Link to me any old time! I hope your day is sunny!
Kelly. I am blushing. Thank you.
Pip - Yes stitching nights were the most fun ever!! I got myself a nice cupcake stand just like yours :-)
ReplyDeleteHey Pip, thanks for the info on the widget reader, I didn't know you could do that, I just set it up on my Blogger blog, and love it! yay!
ReplyDeleteNow I'm not just commenting because you told me too...
ReplyDeleteI just came across your blog via Whip-up (I think) and I think it's pretty fun! I will definitely by coming back!
Thanks for the tips Pip!
ReplyDeleteCheers
Libby
This has been a very useful little series of posts. Quite often newer bloggers email me to ask me a lot of these questions and I always feel clueless about how to answer them. Now I know where to point them to!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! And not for those in the crafting community, it applies to us vegan food bloggers too! Thanks for an excellent post!
ReplyDeletefound this post via whip up and i think it is a great one. i know i am a small blogger and every comment i get makes my day. it feels god to be validating by our peers, whether crafters or mamas or just plain cool people. thanks for the tips, i rarely have time to respond (and blogger does not let you via email, does it?) so i think i shall add the comments appreciated to my sidebar. wonderful idea.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Pip--as a new blogger, I've found this series of posts incredibly helpful (and have felt a little guilty for not always being as active as I might be). Thanks for helping a newbie!
ReplyDeleteWell, I shall give a big hefty AMEN to that! a little common sense goes a long way for the somewhat blogging impaired! People frustrate me so much, sometimes! It's refreshing to see a nice blog on the common courtesies out there. Some people use other blogs a bit much in the snarky area. ;)
ReplyDeleteHere, Here!! I do say, this is excellent advice! Quite excellent indeeed!!!
ReplyDeleteYour writing style, by the way, is so fun and witty. Very enjoyable! Thanks!
This is a great post - I quite often have people ask for advice when they start up a blog. Now I can point them to you and say 'Here are the Ten Commandments - go read the original tablets of stone'.
ReplyDeleteFantastic! You have written a "mind your manners" post in such a nice, unpretentious way! I'm glad I've read this (I found it via whip up) and I guess I'm going to link back at this in my blog! Great work!
ReplyDeleteGosh, you are sooo right!Your post just kicked my head and made me feel "ashamed" for not commenting more and made promise myself to do it more often. On the other hand, it does feel sooo good to receive nice comments on what we write.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your great blog. Just found it via Concha's blog. I loved it!
THANK YOU ALL! How nice that you came over and read my post! I really appreciate all the lovely comments - I do... i really do!!! Here's to being nice and polite in the blogging world. Here's to not judging one another. And here's to supporting each other too!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic lovely post!
ReplyDeleteI'll link to it right away - in hope to get some love, to be honest. It took me some time to start commenting, but since I myself am getting more and more fond of my little bloglife, I leave a note to others more often - well knowing how nice it feels to receive comment and to get to know more nice people out there.
Thank you so much for your fantastic blog - I happened to find it at http://saidosdaconcha.blogspot.com/
have a lovely week everybody!
Great post!!!!
ReplyDeleteI found it through Saídos da Concha (http://saidosdaconcha.blogspot.com). If you don't mind I'll do a bit of translation and post it on our blog.
Oh, you're such a pro! You're exactly writing down all the things we all more or less know, but never really put together. you're writing this all in such a clear and funny way, well done! You should start writing the 'craft bloggers' holy book'!
ReplyDeleteMakes me realize I'm not always a good blogger. I read a lot of blogs and do comment regularly, but not as much as I could. While I know at the same time that I love to get comments on my own blog. You know what's weird? Sometimes I feel a little embarrassed to comment, then I think: they surely won't be waiting for my comment, or I've already commented several times and I don't want to look like some sort of stalker... Sometimes it somehow feels as if you're invading in someone's private domain, especially when someone's writing about serious (personal) stuff. But I think you're right that we all like some support at those times, also from people we don't really know.
That is the best "guide" post I've ever read. Thank you so much. I will definitely heed your words, and I hope that others apply them as well.
ReplyDelete*standing ovation*
ReplyDeleteA great post - indeed series of posts. So heartfelt and true. Too often we take it for granted that everyone is on the same page... (what do you mean you can't hear my internal monologue?)
Great work. All of it.
:) well said! (or written)
