Yesterday, I caught a wee bit of Coolio's 'Gangstas Paradise' - circa 1995 - on one of the music channels. It's the clip featuring Michelle Pfeiffer - perhaps you remember it? You can remind yourself here. You probably don't need to though.. or even want to.... it's pretty bad.
Seeing Michelle up there on the screen took me way back to 1992. To 'Grease 2'. I KNOW you remember 'Grease 2'! I was reminded of just how much I loved Grease. I loved Olivia Newton John. I loved John Travolta incredibly deeply. I loved Frenchie. I loved Rizzo. I loved the Carnival Scene. I loved the tight black trousers. I loved the diner. I loved it all. Nothing would take it's place in my heart until 'The Breakfast Club' came out.
When Grease 2 was released, I remember looking at the reviews (probably in Dolly or Tiger Beat) and being really cross. Who's stupid idea was this? What happened to Sandy? This is not Grease.. this is a FARCE!
I remember talking to my friends about how AWFUL Michelle Pfeiffer was (although we were strangely partial to the sophisticated Maxwell Caulfield). I remember cutting her picture out and putting it in my diary with MICHELLE SUCKS and YOU ARE NOT 'THE ONE THAT I WANT ' written above it.
It was Livvy for me, all the way. As far as I was concerned, Michelle didn't deserve to be in Grease. She wasn't as pretty and Doris Day-ish as Olivia. She wasn't retro-cute. She wasn't a great dramatic actress like Liv. She didn't have that cute Australian accent. She wasn't poodle-skirt material at all. She wasn't Our Livvy. She was just Michelle. Never heard of her before. Didn't want to. In fact, I'd go as far to say that if Livvy wasn't the lead in Grease 2, then it should be me. Or one of my friends. Just NOT Michelle.
So the thing is, that's just mean, isn't it? And I guess, as a thirteen year old girl it might be par for the course to be a wee bit bitchy? Even a bit exclusive? Purely out of loyalty to Our Liv, of course. But still a bit mean. So I'm sorry, Michelle. You are a very good actress - despite thinking it was Okay to be in the Coolio video. I think you've certainly grown into your looks. And your hair is so not frizzy anymore. Your chipmunk cheeks are nicely chiseled now too. And you're not skanky. I don't know why we thought that. You're very pretty and nice and rich and talented. And I apologise. But I still hate Grease 2.
Yours sincerely,
Pip
I'm pretty sure Michelle Pfeifer is in the Coolio video as a tie in for her movie Dangerous Minds--it was part of the soundtrack.
ReplyDeleteGrease 2 was appalling! I adored the first movie as well. There is a very funny review on just how bad Grease 2 was over at IMDB
"So appalling it exerts a perverse fascination"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084021/
Pip you make me laugh!
ReplyDeleteDidn't Michelle have lots of plastic surgery because she "thought she looked like a duck" - I remember reading that quote in an interview.
Never seen Grease 2, not planning to, why can't they just leave good things alone and stop making prequels, sequels and all sorts of other crud?
Poor Michelle. I've always liked her. And the poor thing was only in the Coolio video because of her role in Dangerous Minds (and Gangsta's Paradise was the theme song).
ReplyDeleteShe was fab in Hairspray. Have you seen it?
Of course Grease was the word!
ReplyDeleteBUT...I don't care what any of you say Grease 2 was fantastic!
Let's do it for our country, the red, white & the blue
It's not a lot to ask of us,
our parents would approve
Such classic lyrics in every one of the tunes.
My sister & I taped the songs off the TV on our portable stereo!
Nah, Grease 2 was a shocker. I don't even think the networks will run it anymore.
ReplyDeleteI've never actually seen it, despite having seen Grease a million times (the first time was at an open air cinema at Lakes Entrance). Its still one of my favourites.
ReplyDeleteI read the "looks like a duck" interview too and think of a duck every time I see her.
Michelle Pfeifer once admitted that doing the movie Grease 2 set back her career by about ten years.
ReplyDeleteGrease 2 was a definite let down, more in line with a Porky. But I still loved Maxwell (very Jason Priestly) and Michelle (I'll love her no matter what career mistakes she makes).
I had some of those black pants that Liv had, I wore them to Blue Light Discos, thought I was pretty good. Loved Michelle in Frankie and Johnny, so much so that I named my dog after that movie. Didn't see Grease 2 and probably don't want to.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya sista! Totally agree - Michelle was such a dud! What were they thinking? Tiger Beat - hilarious I remember that. Did anyone out there remember Girl Magazine. Was a UK mag that I read religiously before progressing onto Dolly mag.
ReplyDeletehaha this post made me laugh so hard. Thank you. I was in Grease in high school (Patty Simcox, lol) I mean, weren't we all? haha. And anyway I love Grease, it's great, and Grease 2 is just fake and awful and makes me a little sick. In fact, I've never even seen the whole thing because I couldn't take it. But I think Michelle Pfeiffer has redeemed herself by now. And even did a successful movie musical remake (hairspray) - so, good job michelle. ;)
ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh out loud! I feel exactly the same way about Grease/Grease 2.
ReplyDeleteI think i shall be giggling to myself all day now. THANKYOU!
I LOVE THIS SONG TOO!!
ReplyDeleteShall me sing it together!!

We go together,
like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong,

as shoobop sha wadda wadda yippity boom de boom.
Chang chang changitty chang shoobop,

wha oooh, yeah!
We're one of a kind,
like dip dadip dadip doowop da doobee doo,
our names are signed
boogedy boogedy boogedy boogedy shooby doowop shebop.
Chang chang changitty chang shoobop,
we'll always be like one,
one, one, one, one!
When we go out at night,
and stars are shinin' bright
up in the skies above,
or at the high school dance,
where you can find romance,
maybe it might be love.
rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong
shoobop sha wadda wadda yippity boom de boom
chang chang changitty chang shoobop
dip dadip dadip doowop da doobee doo
boogedy boogedy boogedy boogedy shooby doowop shebop
shada sha wadda wadda yippity boom de boom
rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong
shoobop sha wadda wadda yippity boom de boom
chang chang changitty chang shoobop
dip dadip dadip doowop da doobee doo
boogedy boogedy boogedy boogedy shooby doowop shebop
shada sha wadda wadda yippity boom de boom
a wop baba doo da a wop bam boom
We're for eachother like a wop baba lumop and wop bam boom
Just like my brother is sha na na na na na yippity dip deboom
