First Blueprint, then Adorn, then Oprah's O at Home... and it's looking a little rickety over at Domino Magazine too! The glossy world of Interiors mags certainly is a cut-throat, break-neck, yet expertly french-polished kind of place. Sadly more about numbers then quality, as many things are.
(Personally, I loved the defunct Blueprint the most. It was younger and cuter and way more colourful, and it had a sense of fun that the others didn't. RIP, lovely Blueprint.)
I hope it's not all over for Domino. I really do. I like these kind of multi-faceted mags that touch on food and fashion and design and decorating - in a contemporary way - without being too high end. I'm more about the achievable and the accessible - rather than the aspirational. I do think that things are a bit too fashiony over at Domino though. Yes, I do.
Aside from all that, I'm loving the way that some of our favourite bloggers and etsy sellers and micro-designers have started popping up in mainstream publications like these. It's a kind of crafty game of Where's Wally when a new issue comes out, except there are few clever Wallys - and they all hand-made their own hats in their cute studios surrounded by inspiration boards and gocco printers and crafty stuff like that. If you know what I mean. You probably even know who I mean!
We have super great local Interiors magazines in Australia, but I still love to see what fancy schmancy deco ideas they've got going on in the States. I really do. I think the US has a totally different spin on decorating and food - and I like to see what it's all about. I hope Martha's not the only one left standing - because we need a bit of diversity in our deco-point-of-view, right?
Keep your fingers crossed for Domino. I think they need a super huge transfusion of cashed up advertisers to keep things nice. But stranger things have happened, right?
xx Mikes
Oh gosh, I hope it doesn't disappear! I love it, even though I have had to stop buying it in recent months, it is so expensive, being an import, and I guess with the dive the dollar has taken it'd just get more expensive... but I still wanna be able to flick thru it at Borders! ;o)
