Mike's Stocking Stitchalong - Episode 5 - Cam Learns To Backstitch

Cam's got his needle threaded and his work on his hoop! Go Cam!

see the tip of the needle poking up through the poor boy's hip?!

pulling the needle and floss through to the top...

Now he's pushed the needle up (from underneath his hoop) and through to the top of his work. The needle needs to come up smack bang on your drawn on line. Then he pulls the needle and floss through to the top. See?!

Next, he pushes the needle back down through the work (on the line again). The stitch he made is about half a centimetre long. Keep your stitches nice and level with the drawn on lines for best results (just like Cam did!)

Look... he's pulling the floss down and through - his needle now
underneath the work.

There you have it! Cam's first embroidery stitch! Woot!

Look above - See that he's bringing the needle up again to the top of the work - but notice the gap?! That gap is very important! The needle and floss needs to come up a stitch-length away from the end of the last stitch. So do that now. Good. Make it like our photo!

Now push the needle back down into your work (as above) - it needs to go down into the end of the previous stitch - there's a tiny hole there where you came up before - so poke the needle back into that hole and back through and down under your work. Awesome! Stitching with Cam!

Now look! Two backstitches! Yippee! Doing great!

Now do the same thing again (like Cam's doing above!) Come up a stitch length away - and then go back down into the previous stitch (see below). Okay - these beginning stitches are a tiny bit wonky, but that adds to the charm and handmade feel, I think. If you would like to strive for perfection, however, then be my guest!

Probably that second gap betwixt the two stitches is a bit big...
And probably the second stitch is a bit wonky...
But I think this looks ace! Good on you Cam!

You can also watch this quick video (above) that Kirsty shot at Brown Owls and hear me rabbiting on about backstitching! Good luck stitchers! You can stitch the WHOLE thing in this stitch! But I'll show you some extra stitches over the coming days so that you can show off to your friends!

Thanks Cam! Thanks Kirst!
