Words and Pictures - Remember?

1975?
Please note :: I am wearing bikini bottoms in this photo!

Words and Pictures - Remember?

Remember? :: Skipping along when I was about five, trying to keep up with Nan as she strode briskly ahead. Her shoes were neatly polished and she wore her best coat with a brooch pinned to the lapel. Her hair was perfectly pinned into a neat, swept up hair do. She wore clip on earrings, and powder and she smelled lovely.

Remember? :: Sitting in the kitchen at dear old Doff's house, the table top covered in newspaper, the smell of Silvo hanging in the air as Nan did the fortnightly polish of Doff's silverware. I was always waiting for the time when a genie WOULD come out.

Remember? :: Crouching at the water's edge at Sandy Bay Beach, carefully propping Barbie on her new catamaran, springing up and pulling her along, water skimming out from under her little boat until she fell into the icy water.... the starting again.

Remember? :: Riding my bike up to the park on Mt Nelson and somehow losing my new watch. Searching frantically and then trying to ring Mum on the public phone to tell her. Relieved that the call connected, even though I hadn't put any money in, and then dismayed when I realised that I could hear her, but she couldn't hear me. Sadly riding home, watchless.

Remember? :: Rushing to the corner shop, near Nan's place at Battery Point, $1 in hand, to buy a packet of KISS bubble gum. Hoping there would be Ace Frehley cards inside. Annoyed they were mostly Gene Simmons ones. Wincingly chewing the hard sticks of gum while I flicked through the cards, juggling the waxy paper wrapping they came in.

Remember? :: Walking up to the dam at Tinderbox to pick blackberries. Dawdling back, fingers stained with berry juice, spotting an echidna on the side of the road. Peeling off my jumper and wrapping it carefully around the spiny guy. Discarding the ice-cream container full of berries and carrying the echidna back to the shack to show everyone. Returning him to the roads edge where I found him ten minutes later, recovering the blackberries and walking slowly back home.

  3. My granma's sisters lived in Battery Point for many many years. My Mum was born somewhere near there. My granma's ashes are scattered in a park near there.
    Thanks for the memories!

  8. Oh such evocative writing. Your photo made me remember rounding the point of a mysterious beach on the East Coast of Tassie to find a small bay made entirely of shells. We filled the overflowing pockets of our tracky dacks with hundreds of cowrie shells.
    - thank you for reminding me.

  9. I always preferred Ace Frehley to Gene Simmons, too. No idea why, now, of course ...
