Library Books I Want To Steal - Episode 4

Nigel Slater. Hmm. He's totes one of my homeboys. Truly. AND despite the fact that the Seasons are ALL wrong for Australia, I love this book. I want it. I think I will have to buy it. I've made lots of things from it already. It's lovely, simple, hearty, home cooked food. Proudly rich with butter and oil and cream and all that's good.

I would definitely never REALLY steal it from the Library. Because my Library stocks the book we made. Yes. So I think they are being pretty nice in doing that. Best not bite the hand that feeds. Nope.

You can buy the soft cover edition of this book here for only $35. Spend over $50 and the postage is free. Watcha waiting for?! This book is the schizzle.

:: Swap Sweden?! ::

Hello!

Do you live in Sweden?! Or somewhere that you can buy Swedish magazines?! I would like to do a swap with you, if you do! I am trying to get my hands on some copies of Family Living Magazine - and perhaps some lovely Swedish interiors magazines. I will swap for some ace Australian Magazines like Frankie and Peppermint and the like! Any takers? Comment below if this sounds like you! The magazines don't have to be new!

PS - That's my new haircut. As you can see my hair has a flyaway mind of it's own today. At least it looks shiny, right? At the shoot the lady brushed my fringe for me nicely. It still kinked in the middle a bit. Darn cow-licks. And I have a Muppet mouth too ;) So don't tell me that. I know it.

::Watchabeen Doing? :

Home

What have you been up to today? I'll tell you what I've been doing:

Crocheting.
Getting ready for a shoot tomorrow.
Working in the shop (Hi Flora!!)
Playing on Farmville with Ari.
Sipping tea with Victoria.
Thinking about going to Bar Lourhina next week.
Buying some L'Occitane Lavender hand cream for my Lizard Lady hands. I got it from Klein's.
Getting cross with Kyle and Jackie O and the Mother and the 2DayFM management.
Stamping new swing tags and trying to re-tag all the garments in the store
Getting stock ready to send to The Age to be photographed.
Eating cheese on bread with sliced tomato and chilli.
Drinking coffee from Radio (have fun in Tokyo!)
Looking at Jess's gorgeous Gocco printed card. And the bear she made over here.

Now, I'm finishing off some work, waiting for dinner to be ready (roast chicken and Nigel Slater's pot roasted sliced potatoes with cheese and garlic) and drinking wine in front of the heater (thanks Vic!). The water was off due to a burst main but it's back on now. Dinner is late though! Well. At least we have water! I'm a bit tired and grumpy. Cam keeps asking me questions and I have just said 'Please no more questions. Just for tonight.' He has gone upstairs. Sorry Cam. (But please, no more questions, right?!) Do you ever feel like that?

Tomorrow I have a photo shoot for the very nice Melbourne Magazine - I got my hair cut super nice (translation no more split ends and knotty bits) especially by Monica at Monx Love. She's cute. If you hate going to the hairdresser, she's your girl. Just tell her I sent you! After that I'm meeting lovely Rosemary from Healesville to pass on some donations. Then some more worky stuff and kid stuff and stuff stuff. Phew. I'm totes stuffed.

Have you been doing some things? What things? Tell me what!

Later - Project Runway and clicking through the rest of the links on 'I'm coveting' and 'I made this!' (and some Farmville!).

:: Falcon Chair and Ari's Blankie...

Here's the blanket I made over the last 10 days or so for Ari.
I used a nice big hook and nice fat yarn.
It was quick and fun to make - it's kind of a telly blanket, ya know?
It's for snuggling under while you cosy down and watch a nice movie.
I guess it measures around 1.5m by 1.5m.
Stitched with love, slightly wonky, super cosy and still waiting for the ends to be sewn in!
I'm making the Max blankie next.

:: Monday Wondering - Does The Internet Make Us Happier? ::

image via the ace Chris Piascik

Is the flip side of the internet shrinking our world to a mere mouse-click, that we are all feeling more pressured, less wordy, more competitive and more isolated in other ways?

Does reading about all the good stuff other people are doing make us feel insecure about our own abilities, or does it inspire us?

Are instant messaging and Twitter encouraging short, sharp, smart-arse wordsmithing? Do they make us feel excluded or ignored? Or do they make us more familiar and intimate?

Is keeping up with all our internet friends meaning less time for our real-life friends? Are we one big happy family, or is it just one big schoolyard all over again?

Is the relative anonymity of the internet encouraging nastiness and bad manners? Are some blog comments becoming slanderous snark-fests? Or are they thought-provoking forums for discussion and debate?

Are we sharing and chatting? Or are we sneaking and copying? Are we supporting each other? Or are we just on a constant, clicky 'inspiration' junket? Are we giving anything back in return?

Do we appreciate the things we see? Or are we becoming image-junkies - scrolling for beautiful things to admire and then wordlessly moving on to something else?

Is the desire to be noticed, attract readers or seem interesting, influencing the way we write and treat other people?

Does the Internet make us happier?

I think it makes me happier... In fact I know it does. It provides me with a way to document my life, publish my work and connect with people I like. It teaches me stuff, reminds me of stuff... it's mostly a positive for me.

What do you think, I wonder? Do weigh in! I'd love to hear your take on this - and be sure to read the comments to see what other people thought!

A Week Of Special Stuff - Day Four

I am so lucky to know so many crafty people. I am. It's one of the up-sides of running a tiny-seat-of-your-pants-often-causing-sleepless-nights kind of business. The constant strain and stress of keeping the doors open and the bills paid is balanced beautifully by the amazing, nice and talented people we get to meet.

Speaking of crafty, look up there! Those are special, aren't they. They are cute made-by-hand softies. They were given to me by their makers. You can't get much fresher then that, can you?! I'll tell you who we have in this line-up... We have:

A cow from Fliss - find her at Udder - and find the pattern in the 'Meet Me at Mike's' book
A tooth fairy from Shannon - she's over at Aunty Cookie
And owl from Jess - visit her at Teddy Bears Wednesday
A woodland girl from lovely Jhoanna - you know she's One Red Robin
And a cute Aranzi Aronzo Guy made by Suzie - of Soozs fame

I met all of these ace people through the shop and my blog and their blogs. How cool is that? It's really a nice thing to have a blog, isn't it?! Thanks for the guys, guys! I look at them every single day and feel lucky and special.

A Week Of Special Stuff - Day Three

Noice cloud!, originally uploaded by meetmeatmikes.

Look. This is special, don't you think? This is special to ME. This is a window from the Original Meet Me At Mike's store in Richmond. It's from about 2 years ago... I made all those cute raindrops from old pillowcases and sheets and little dresses and things.... and the cloud was made from some thrifted Scandy fabric and a TON of polyfill. I made it right in the shop one day and stuffed and stuffed all afternoon.

Can you see there are some geese there too? One of those featured in an issue of Frankie last year after we finally relented and sold it to a Goose-Loving girl. She was later photographed in a lovely dress... I think her Grandmother's dress for Frankie?! The girl, not the goose.

I still have some of these raindrops in my house... and the cloud became a dog-bed for Lucky and Snoopy until they tore it open and cheekily spilled the filling across our courtyard like stuffing-snow! They now sleep in a suitcase lined with lovely vintage blankets, so fear not!

I attached the raindrops with twine and safety pins... nicely spaced under the cloud... and then we pasted some music book pages behind.. and more thrifty fabric on the floor too...

The dollshouse seemed to complement the whole thing nicely.. so that's why that's there.. and there's my favourite little red stool barely visible near those previously mentioned geese.

The first Mike's store was pretty special, I think. Did you ever go there, I wonder?

A Week of Special Stuff - Day Two

I am totally into Norwegian Ceramics. I know. It's a little obscure... but I really especially love Figgjo pieces. I heart this Figgjo Lotte Teapot SO MUCH. We don't use it very often, because I'm scared of breaking the lid (as I did with my old Wedgwood one!) - but it takes pride of place on my dining room shelves. I bought it after my first happy meeting with Hardie Grant (my publisher) - and I try to mark important events with a piece of Norway now. Is that weird?!

I have lots of other Figgjo pieces too - in their Market and Folklore and Daisy designs. They are special. I like their happy, clunky shapes, their cheery colours and their sketchy designs.

I love them so very much I had to buy this 'Lotte' necklace when I saw it. I know. It's a bit Carrie Bradshaw, but I do consider myself the Carrie Bradshaw of Norwegian Ceramics. Don't you always think of me like that?! I think it's funny that no one will have any idea what I'm talking about when I tell them Lotte is not my name. And that my necklace is a tribute to Figgjo. They will think I'm loco. But I'm okay with that.

A Week Of Special Stuff - Day One

Hi!

I have lots of special stuff around my house. I know that's surprising. OK. Maybe not. You don't look surprised at all, actually. Well, I guess you KNOW I have lots of special stuff. It's nice that we are all sharing this week, huh? For my first post, I want to go back to where this blog began - back to my favourite children's books. Hurrah!

When I was little, my absolute favourite book was Debbie Learns to Dance. It's illustrated by Marcel Marlier, who is one of my favourite illustrators, and written by Gilbert Delahaye. I have quite a collection of these lovely books - some found in op shops and some found on eBay. They are published by Ward Lock. I think they are pretty special. I've scanned some images for you, so you can take a look. I hope you think they're special too!

Doing Stuff...

Hello!

Look! I made this dress yesterday. It took about two hours to cut and sew betwixt cups of tea and spoonfuls of beetroot. The fabric is from Spotlight in South Melbourne. It was about $8 a metre, so not too pricey. I used 3 metres, as the skirt is quite full. It's a nice light, drapey cotton. I used a vintage pattern - with a few Pip-style alterations. I'm going to make some more changes - and I haven't hemmed it yet, but I'm really happy with the result. I'm such a florally frocky girl. I think this suits me perfectly! You like?

More stuff I'm doing later on :: I've been doing quite a lot of stuff, actually!

:: What I've Been Reading - Great Food Blogs...

Dinner Rolls - recipe here

I'm trying to tame my Google Reader. (For those of you that don't know - Google Reader is a service offered by Google where you can read all your blogs with ease and automatic updates.) I've been using the 'Blogs I Read' feature in the right hand column of this page, mostly. ------>

Then I've been logging in to Google Reader and just blindly marking all the blogs in there as read. I want to keep the list there so that I can go back to it - but I don't want to make hard work of reading good stuff. Yep. I know. It's a bit radical. But I think that blog reading is not a task. It's something to enjoy and savour when you have the time. It shouldn't be a scroll-through, commentless, chore, now should it? It's meant to be FUN, right?

I think you should read the blogs you feel like reading on any given day - and not worry about 'missing out' or 'not keeping up' , ya know?! Google Reader and Twitter are great - but they do seem to stop people from actually dropping in to a blog and saying hello. Everyone is just skimming past post after post - or chatting on Twitter as an alternative. Interesting, huh? I think we need to slow down a bit.

Because I've been reading fewer blogs more carefully, I've fallen in love all over again with a lot of great people who are writing about good stuff. Some people put a lot of time and effort into their blogs, they really do - I want to take my time with those kind of people! So since my Reader Ignore, it's been much more about the things people are writing and not just about skimming or clicking though and stopping at the most arresting images.

I'll share some of my fave blogs over the next few weeks. You can add these to your Reader, if that works for you - or just bookmark them and file them by adding the label JULY FOOD BLOGS - then they are just sitting in a folder and easy peasy to find when you want to use or add to them. But you don't need to feel OBLIGATED to read them! (More ideas about Bookmarking here.)

This time, it's all about the loveliest Food and Recipe Blogs. Yum.

Look. It's me! Back in March 'Home Beautiful' magazine came to my house and pushed the dirty socks far enough under the couch so that you can't see them. It scrubbed up pretty good, I think (the house, that is!) So, if you buy the August issue, you can see the rest of my messy house and more in a wordy, colourful three page extravaganza!

Thanks to Wendy Bannister from Home Beautiful for trying to understand my 'nicely tamed clutter' in the face of her own penchant for minimalism - and to lovely Lisa Cohen for taking such Mikesy pictures! I totally don't look like a potato in this photo. Thanks.

Oh gosh. Do you think it's the fug of Winter or the fug of Flu that's got me wondering and thinking and philosophising? I guess it doesn't really matter which. I've been doing a lot of thinking lately. Thinking about the big things and how to make life sunnier and better. Thinking about how to get more out of days that are becoming increasingly busier.

And, well, it's come down to stock and notebooks, really.

I think it's important to take stock and to remember to notice the good stuff that's going on around you. Sometimes it's easier to curl up under a blanket and not take time to do nice things. Sometimes it's easier to do things, rather then nicely curl up under a blanket. I guess we all have our own versions of too much forging ahead and not enough looking at the great stuff that's going on around us. Does that sound like you? It sounds a bit like me.

We have these very excellent lists (which I love, btw) - but sometimes they are being ticked off by a demonic lady who forgot to brush the back of her hair and has her dress tucked into her knickers. Perhaps it would be better if less things were ticked, but more time was taken to actually soak things up? Am I rambling like a mad woman? Yes. A bit. Could you please pass me the hair-brush (and get out your notebooks, kids.)

3 Little Things For You To Do Today:

Choose a book you have read and loved. Make note of a phrase in that book that makes you nod with understanding or shake your head with wonder. Write it down in your notebook.

Stop for three minutes. Sit down. Or lie down. Think about things you could do that are nice. Write the most favourite thing down in your notebook.

Make a cup of tea or coffee for yourself. Make it slowly. Stop rushing. Take your time to spoon your sugar or scoop your tea or stir your cup carefully.

Furoshiki - How To Wrap Stuff Super-Cutely....

Last night, we had a lovely friend over who had just returned from Japan! We got to see all the nifty stuff she collected during her travels (and to give her a very belated birthday gift!). Wow. She had some good stuff in her handy-dandy suitcase, I can tell you!!!

We ate : Roast beef, simple tomato salad, honeyed eggplant, brown sugar baked baby potatoes with roasted garlic, oven bag roasted honeyed carrots and steamed jam pudding.

We played with all the computers that I'm testing at the moment - that would be EIGHT brand new notebooks.

We watched bits of 'Paris. Je T'Aime'.

We had a nice time!! This morning I randomly stumbled across this video - and it seemed to fit perfectly with last night's Post-Japan theme! Watch it! You will be amazed! It's like magic.
