:: Try (Buy)

I'm going to leave the gift guides to other people who do them so well.  I like to read them, I do, but I think that you can visit other ace people like Lexi or Lucy and find out what is cute this year.  I am not going to cover that here this December.  I am going to write about other stuff.  I hope that is okay. It's okay with me, at least!  I will be reading along, with me....!  That makes one of us, at the very least!

Seriously, though, I think it is easy to get a bit overwhelmed with the BUY.  Personally, I like to stay calm and keep the gift shopping quick, low-key, vintage or handmade and local.

So, instead of a BUY THIS guide I  am doing a TRY THIS guide. I wanted to think about something apart from the BUY, like some nice things to TRY!   Trying can lead to all sorts of awesome things, happy times and new friends.  And those things can last longer than Christmas.. they can last the year... or even a life time if you try the right things!

So let's go!

::::::::::

  • Try playing - or watching - your local Roller Derby Team.  This is a super great sport and it's played by really awesome, energetic, smart girls and you will LOVE it.  Even if you just spectate, there is a lot going on and it's a total fun-attack for the whole family.  Google should tell you where your local roller gals hang out.
  • Try playing the piano : or pick up a vintage keyboard from a second hand store and come over all 80s synth-like.  Possibly you could shave your head on one side if you were really in to the whole rock star thing.  Or maybe you could play the xylophone, because they are really cool and feature in a lot of cute folksy songs.  You may like to wear a crocheted shawl or a feather in your hair if you are xylophoney.
  • Try ceramics : wouldn't you like to make beautiful sculptural bowls... or some naive sixties inspired figures : do that!  Or latte cups, those are fancy and chic and useful, maybe you could learn to make those too?  I think it's really great to learn new things and to get messy.  I think we take our plates for granted and we should all learn where they come from and why you can put some in the oven and not others.
  • Try driving somewhere you have never been before : plan a long trip and take a friend or your family.  Take photos along the way and put together your own little trip guide. Maybe go to the beach, or the bush, or a river far away.   Make a mix cd or playlist to play in the car. Enjoy the journey and the things you see, not just the place you get to.
  • Try catching a train a very long way : maybe to the other side of the country?  Maybe just to a country town.  Pack a picnic and pretend you are in The Darjeeling Limited or on The Orient Express.  Perhaps without the murder and the sexy bits... unless you are the adventurous or criminal kind. It's also good to play cards on the train, I think, so take a deck of cards.
  • Try learning to dance.  Perhaps you are a very good booty-shaking, rubber-gloved kitchen dancer?  Perhaps you do that thing where you bite your bottom lip with your top teeth and you shoulder shimmy at the same time?  You are totes co-ordinated, yep.   I am all for those things, but how about some fancier steps?  How about a partner who does not shy away and pretend they are heading to the bathroom as they dance away from you?  How about puffy skirted dancing or some Soul-Train pant-suit kind of dancing?   Or some dancing that requires red lipstick and a rose in your teeth.  I think you would have fun, I do.
  • Try writing long letters to people you really like.  If your handwriting looks like a spider has spasmed in the ink well, as mine often does, then practice makes perfect.... write more often.  And write to people you like, because they can keep the letters and read over them when they are cross with you.  And then they will like you again.  It's true.

What do you want to try?

:: My photos of Clare Bowditch...

Hey Happy Monday to you!

We went to the Queenscliff Music Festival yesterday. (Yes it HAS been kinda busy 'round here!)  It's held in a sleepy little town every year and there are 3 days of bands and good times.  We just went for the Sunday, as we had lots of other things going on. We were lucky enough to somehow swing two rooms at the Vue Grand (including breakfast) extra cheap. I do not know how that happened, but it was totally affordable.  It's such a lovely old hotel, not heavy on facilities, but just cute and charming in a Nanna kind of way.  After consulting our friends on Twitter (thank you iPad!) we had dinner at the Bowling Club on Sunday night.  I totally LOVED that because there was an awesome mix of people who had been at the festival and lots of locals in their noisy track-suits.  The food was unpretentious and the views over the ocean and the bowling green and the tennis courts were fantastic.

These photos are of Clare Bowditch and The New Slang.  Fresh from touring with Leonard Cohen, they stood in for Megan Washington who was unwell and could not perform after all.  I was sad not to see the very ace Megan.. but I was so so so happy to see Clare and her band. They were rad. Not only are they a great band, but they seem to really love playing together... and they are FUN.  Clare is really cute and funny and she sings like a colourful bird.  She is charismatic and pretty and naughty and clever, I think.  I love her.  I do.

Dear Megan, I hope you are feeling better. I will see you soon.

I have some other photos to show you of our weekend.  I will put them all in the next post, I think. I hope you like these ones. I really do. There was very little light and lots of movement, so they turned out great considering my amateur photography skills and tricky conditions.

I hope your weekend was really great. I hope you are getting out and doing good stuff.  I think you should, because the good stuff keeps you going through the hard times.  So go do good stuff.

:: Roller Derby.. Kinda Blurry...

Sorry.  My camera could NOT keep up with these girls.  Not only were they totes hot, but they are the fast kind of girl.  You can find out more about Victorian Roller Derby here.  That means they are FROM Victoria... they are not wearing bustles and sipping soup from silver spoons whilst pressing flowers.

We had the BEST time at the Roller Derby Grand Final and it's totally something you should support, I think.  Or you could add yourself to their Potential Fresh Meat list, if you want to play.  I am not the best skater, so you won't find ME on that list...but I reckon this girl would be perfect because when we lived in Western Australia together she was a really good skater.  AND she likes to get dressed up.

:: 'Tony Tonight...

Ari's cooking tonight.  I bought him this book.  I have a grand plan to put a chef's hat on him and sit in the dining room drinking ginger beer while he prepares dinner for everyone.  Okay. Perhaps not, but I think maybe that is Ari's grand plan.  Apparently I am not allowed to help at all.  I think I will loiter and do the draining of the pasta, at the very least...

Tonight we are having 'Rigatony with Meatballs' according to the shopping list Ari made for me.  I can not wait.  I want to meet that kind of  'Tony.  I do.

This is a really good book for budding cooks.  It's full of illustrated simple Italian recipes, but they are not dumbed down, so you won't be eating garlic-less Napoli sauce or pita bread pizzas.  It's still the real deal, which I think is great.

:: At My House Today....

Look how BIG the Frankie Spaces Mook is! Holy macaroni.  It's huge. AND it is probably the best interiors book I've seen this side of the Paumes ones.  So you should get it.

The other book is by Karin Lindroos : and I found it here.  It's full of vintage interiors and cute fashion.  Totally great!

In the oven I have nice sausages with cherry tomatoes and onions and whole cloves of garlic and heaps of sea salt and black pepper and paprika and fresh herbs.  Yum.  The potatoes are peeled and waiting to be boiled and mashed.  And I think some wine is in order, too.

I'm going to crochet and see-saw-watch 'Breaking Bad' Season 3 and 'Damages' Season 3 tonight.  That means, one, then the other, don't you know?  I made it up.

What are you liking and watching and reading and eating?  I would love to know.  I would.

Smooches to you,

Your pal Pip

:: Do You Know An Anzac Like That?

What? Anzacs? I know. It's not Anzac Day.  But I really LOVE Anzacs. I love Butternut Snaps too.. even though they don't come close to the chewy aceness that is a good Anzac Biscuit.  Victoria just gave me two Anzacs and  a cup of tea.  How nice is that?  So nice.  We are listening to the Sew La Tea Do Launch Mix on the iPod and I have just finished two email interviews.  The thing is, now my Anzac interest is piqued and I want to make some.  Very soon. Maybe tonight.

Have you noticed that sometimes Anzacs can be too dry and crumbly.  I really don't like that.  And sometimes they are like little mounds of teeth-breaking sugaryness.  I don't like that either.  Do you have a good Anzac Recipe?  Can you post it on your blog and link to it?  Or could you post it in the comments below, even? We want a golden, buttery, chewy, not too thin Anzac.  Do you know an Anzac like that?  Do you like Anzacs?  Do you dunk them in your tea?  What do you do?

:: Happy Birthday To Me! I am Four! Sort of.

Hello!

Today is my Blog Birthday.  I have been blogging for 4 years.  Golly.  Time totally flies. Those 4 years seem more like 2, to be honest.  Where did the days go?!

I'm making some changes here in the next 12 months. Making things a bit bigger and even better.

But for now I will just chatter along as always, if that's okay!  I'm really pleased that you guys are reading.  I'm really pleased that I have met SO many nice people through this blog.  And I am just so pleased that it has helped keep things on track in the life of Mike (and me).  Thanks to you people for that.  Thanks a super bunch.

I'm also really glad to blog alongside so many great Australian and International bloggers.  It's a great community of creative people and I am glad I am in that gang.

Want to light a candle on my 4 year old cake?  Want to say hello for the first time?  Or just say hello as usual? Or say hello for old times sake?  Go on!  Make my day.

:: Miss Marlo Dress :: Sew La Tea Do :: Extra Info!

Hello!

 As is sometimes the case with technical books we have found a printing error.  It's with the Miss Marlo Dress. During the printing process 3 pattern pieces have been scaled down incorrectly.  (The back facing is the correct scale.)  If you are going to make this dress, please email me so I can help you make the necessary adjustments. We will sort it out together.  I will tell you what to do.  (You can also email the publisher directly : if I am tardy in replying to you!)

The reprint will contain the pattern as I originally designed it : without the scaling error.  I am so sorry if this error has caused you any problems!  (I am trying to remain calm too.)

 Hope your day is going well!

(Good grief!)

:: I Like This Track... Twin Sister

Sort of 2010 Bananarama meets Sweet 'n' Sour meets Lykke Li meets kitchen-dancing meets Sesame Street meets a cloud of tissue paper and textas. Sort of. I like a bit of humorous lo-fi cute. This is that. I think.

:: Hello. My Name Is Awesome.

Gasp.  I feel faint.  I may keel over with the extreme delight of looking at these completely beautiful, amazing, divine, lovely hand embroidered cushions.  Zowee.  You can find LOTS more here, at the amazing Catstudio.  I can not believe how much I love these.  Please someone buy me one.  I will love you forever.  I will.

Catstudio also have similarly rad silk-screened famous place drinking glasses and embroidered dish towels (or tea towels as we like to call them : although some people in our house call them NAPKINS.... sheesh!)
