:: Crockpot Concussion

This morning I reached up to get my slow cooker down and BAM, the lid slid off and fell straight on to my head. Ouch. It really hurt A LOT. Then it continued a merry ramble from my head to the bench top (where it shattered) and then on to the floor, into the sink and across the bench top. That was the end of the lid.

It was not the end of me. But I think I have concussion.  I am feeling a bit blurry and am remembering the phrase 'knocked her silly' which perhaps my Nanna used to say.  Anyhoo. If I am not here tomorrow you know that the Crockpot concussed the crap out of me.  But I am sure I will be fine.

I decided to use a heavy pan and the oven instead.  A crockpot attack will not stop me from making dinner. No siree.   I will not be beaten by a very thick, heavy glass lid. Oh no I won't.  Even if it is making me a bit cross-eyed. Nup.  Here is what I made, in spite of that ba$%ard lid.

Crockpot Concussion Beef
(to have in tortillas or tacos)
based on this recipe

500g of gravy beef
1 tin of tomatoes, juice and all
1 jar of nice quality salsa
1 cup of chicken stock
1 diced onion
3 cloves of garlic, crushed
a tablespoon of cumin
a teaspoon of paprika : smoked or not
a teaspoon of dried mixed herbs
1 teaspoon of brown sugar
a slosh of sherry vinegar or other nice vinegar
Lots of ground black pepper (or lovely white pepper!)
Some salt
Some olive oil

NB : I add chilli to my own, because my kids are not super spicy, but you can add chilli when you cook it if you like... and some beans would be nice too!

Mix all these things together, drizzle with some olive oil and put in a heavy based pan in a low oven for 4 hours.
Or in a slow cooker for 6 hours on high : if you use a slow cooker you will need to remove the meat and reduce the sauce down at the end.

Pull the beef apart with two forks and serve in tortillas with some of its sauce and lots of avocado, tomato, lettuce, jalapenos and extra salsa!  Cheese is nice for some people too, so add cheese if you like!

Have you ever been concussed in your kitchen? I really don't recommend it..!

xx Pip

  2. I nearly sliced my thumb off the other & that wasn't funny either. But life goes on! (and food sustains us!)... At least you won't have a baby grabbing your sore head every few minutes like my bubba keeps doing to my bandaged thumb!

  3. Oh no! I hope you have someone to look after you, or at the very least do the dishes! x

  4. I winced as I read this! You poor thing! Our crockpots live in the cupboard under the sink and when I read this I realised that must be why my fella puts them there. Because its the sort of thing that would happen to me. I hope your head feels better and that you are able to find a new lid for the crockpot in an oppy or ebay.

  5. Maybe not concussion, but I do have scars from the overhead cupboard doors. I've also double dislocated my thumb lifting a wine-barrel-end cheeseboard off a shelf.

  9. Ouch! Concussion is very much *not fun*! My brother did hit me on the head with a saucepan once. It hurt! But I didn't get concussion, and he did not get ice-cream. You should have some ice-cream though! It's very good for when you are sore.

  11. If that's a photo of the miscreant, then I'll be keeping an eye out for rogue crockpots since I have an identical one lurking somewhere in my kitchen.....

    Hope the head's better!

  13. Well done on still cooking! I had a jar of pickled something fall on my head once from the top of the pantry, I was dizzy and had to sit down, I had blood in my hair and was furious my husband took so long to get home after I called him and told him what happened. I guess I wouldn't have been able to be so mad if I was actually concussed...

  14. Oh Pip, I saw your tweet about this earlier today and I was sad about the lid, but I didn't realise you got whacked in the head too!! Poor love.

  15. I smashed my salad bowl and 2 pyrex dishes last week (as noted on my blog). They must have bounced back up as my leg got sliced and I needed stitches.

I'm now making changes to not have any dangerous glass items up high. I'm on edge each time I open the fridge (as they were on top of the fridge).

Small pieces of shards are being expelled from my body still today (legs, chest and arms).

You are lucky it didn't slice your head!

  16. Ouch!

and oh dear.... I would be devastated if I broke the lid to my crock pot - its revolutionised the way I cook (and eat)
glad to hear you are ok though. the recipe sounds delish - Ive just found a stew recipe which uses pomegranate juice which Im dying to try

  17. How painful! I'm glad you've survived, but in all seriousness watch for nausea and/or headache; if you have a true concussion you should have it checked out. Stay safe and healthy, and eat more tacos!

  18. Ouch - that photo of a crockpot could be my mothers, hers was identical. You can't buy these any more, well, not in Australia. Many a Sunday pea and ham soup was made in this - they were the best of times:)

  19. Oooooouch!! I feel your pain. Can't say I've ever been concussed in the kitchen but I do have a stock pot that has the potential so I'll take your experience as a warning and get a chair in future. Your beef sounds delish, I think I'll give it a burl. Hope your feeling better.
