:: Mario's, Home Days and Telly too...
Hey! I hope you are well! We spent the weekend resting up and hanging out with family. It was super nice. Wintery weather walks along Brunswick Street are always nice, esp when there are cousins and aunties and uncles in tow. We descended on Mario's for coffee and cake late yesterday and they were really lovely and accommodating, considering there were 14 of us. I guess after 25 years they take most things in their stride. Happy 25th Mario's! Their chocolate cake is the very best you will find.
Both kids are home today. One is awaiting a trip to see Tutankhamen with his cousins. The other is ill. I am ill too. Meh. No matter, I've had a good run lately, so I shall just rest up and be better tomorrow. Yes. I will.
I've been watching The Kennedys on ABC1. A friend gave me Downton Abbey to watch a while ago (I love it!), so I've not been watching that... I'm really liking The Kennedys. I'm not much of a Katie Holmes fan, but I think the rest of the cast are really great. Have you seen it? What do you think?
I also watched a REALLY GREAT NEW SERIES on ABC2 (I actually watched it on iView). It's called Design For Life. It's a reality show based around Philippe Starck and 12 eager, impressionable design students. I just watched the first episode, where they all arrived in Paris and were set a Supermarket design challenge. It was so great. Philippe Starck is so hilarious. I love his kissy, comic, paunchiness. I love the way he approaches designing products, circling around the brief and gathering inspiration, concepts, layers of meaning and touches of humour, before editing it all down to the final practical solution. Super great.
And finally, Victoria told me about another great program showing on the ABC called Art Race. Artists Ben and Kenny start out on opposite sides of the US with $1 and only their painterly nouse to secure them food, lodging and transport. They have to make it right across the country and try and sell their work as they go. It's really interesting to see how they approach it, and even MORE interesting to see how 'everyday' people value art. I am completely in love with the sweet and talented Kenny. I would totally let him stay at my house (ahem). Not such a fan of Ben... It's on iView as well.
What are you watching? Something good? Could you tell us about it in the comments section?! Go on...
xx Pip

Thanks Pip! I didn't know about iView. Now I can watch stuff!
ReplyDeleteI saw Design for Life last night and really enjoyed it. Starck is something else, isn't he! What a mind, and I could watch him interact with people all day.
I'll have to have a look at Art Race. Sounds like a good'un.
There is a lovely documentary on iView called Men Who Swim - it's awesome and I loved it!!!xx
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you and one of your offspring are both under the weather! We're heading into summer here in NY, and I've noticed many folks getting ill too... I guess it doesn't matter what the temp is!
ReplyDeleteI've been addicted to 'Lark Rise to Candleford'! Thankfully my public library was kind enough to purchase all four series of the program, and I've been spending a lot of time lost in the late-1800s English hamlet of Lark Rise and town of Candleford and all of the wonderful people who populate both places. Really amazing period program!
Daughter and I are loving The Kennedys. Had to explain to her about Katie Holmes in Dawson's Creek and her pre-Tom-Cruise-days.
ReplyDeleteI do like her in this, love greg Kinnear. I can't bear Ch7 so will have to wait to see Downton when my library buys the DVDS.
Oh YES! I want to watch Men Who Swim!
ReplyDeleteOh YES! I am a huge Lark Rise fan too! I love Julia Sawalha! And I love the Timmons Family! And I love Alfie! And I love Minnie! And I love Queenie! SUCH A GREAT SHOW!!!! Yes!
Pip, we are TWINS!
ReplyDeleteI too am LOVING The Kennedy's but can't quite get fond of Katie Holmes. She can't do a Bawwwwston accent that well, which is a silly little reason to not like her but a reason nonetheless!
Art Race is also one of my faves on iView and I don't really like Ben either!! Kenny I have a HUGE crush on, he is so incredibly sweet and lovely and TALENTED.
x x
Excuse me, Bel. I saw him first. xx
ReplyDeleteoh iView..... let me count the ways i love thee!
ReplyDeletei watched Phillip Starck's show tucked in bed with my ipad on iView last night. I LOVED LOVED LOVED it. he is warm & real. i loved his discussion of the french saying 'we think everything is bad. even when something is good we say "hmmm it's bad! '
the other must watch for me is School of Comedy- just love the cleverness of the kids in it.
as always Pip- love that you share. xx
I was inspired to study interior design this year by Starck, and I never knew this show existed! must watch it when I don't have homework. which is never lol
ReplyDeleteIn the past I watched a lot of tellie, now not so much. My husband and I are watching The Soprano's since we never watched the first run. We're also watching The Wire having done an intensive catch up over the last 3 months to where they are currently airing. I'm watching Offspring on my own.
ReplyDeleteMy Tivo has Season Passes to heaps of things but a lot get deleted to free up space - on file now are 7 x Desperate Housewives, 5 x House, 18 x Jamie's 30min meals (I have watched a few already), Masterchef (so far only finding time for Masterclass). I've taped a number of good kids movies and they are chewing up space as well as Dora's & Diego's.
Anyway, only an hour to watch TV a day makes it very limiting which is probably not a bad thing.
dxx
PS The Kennedy's was on TV while I was sewing last night so only got a glimpse, wish I could've seen the whole thing. I'll try to check it out on iView, as well as Phillipe Stark & the art guys.
i just watched an amazing documentary on the sundance channel about carny's called "Carny" (you know, people in traveling carnivals). it was heart-wrenching and honest. i cried. a lot.
ReplyDeleteFor the past few weeks I've been having my own Spooks retrospective. I've watched Series 1 to 6 in about a month. My bum has been glued to that sofa and I've been loving it. I've finished my boxed set now, though, so am missing my spooky friends. Time to get out and reconnect with my real friends, I'd say!
ReplyDeleteHappy 25th Birthday to Mario's. I saw that Art Race show the other day. It was quite interesting but I'm not sure if I would ever have the guts to do it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for telling me about Design for Life - just watched the first episode and really enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteiView is the backbone of this house. With a 4 year old and a new baby, I am never able to see shows at their air time so I watch iView at all weird sorts of hours of the night. The Hannah Gadsby look at the National Gallery of Victoria's 150 birthday (which is on at the moment) is pretty good. And you simply cannot go past Grand Designs. Art Race has been fun too (can't warm to Ben though!)! Hungry Beast is the other mainstay I watch - great Australian produced investigative show.
ReplyDeleteMario's looks divine! I've promised Mr Almost 5 a trip on a tram, I think we might have to get off on Brunswick St and pop in to Mario's.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree re Katie Holmes. I can do a better Boston accent, and I'm a Melbourne girl, born and bred. Otherwise, loving the Kennedys. What a bizarre family!
Thanks Pip! Some great watching ideas!!
ReplyDeleteOn the weekend we watched HOME. Might be old news to most peeps but it was a really fantastic documentary about the earth - you can watch it for free here: http://www.youtube.com/user/homeprojectFR#p/f/1/jqxENMKaeCU
It was really good!!!
Mario's was our regular back in the day, 20 years ago when I was in Uni and Greg was our fabulous waiter! How I miss it - best coffee ever.
ReplyDeleteHere in the UK we've seen the first series of 'The Killing', a completely brilliant Danish murder/mystery that you MUST see. Also, the French detective series 'Spiral', though series 1 and 2 were better than the third.

Thanks for the telly tips, I'm a big fan of iview. I like to do a bit of day time crafting and sneak in a bit of iview action at the same time. Have you watched the show about the sextuplets on ABC? Crazy but compelling. Ahh...Mario's, lets hope it's always there. Is that rather OTT waiter still there? He really put the wind up customers, which was amusing if it wasn't you :)
ReplyDeleteI too have been stuck home with sick kidlets so there has been much pottering about with pancake making, crocheting and sweet tea. Of an evening I have been finally watching Ashes to Ashes. I watched Life On Mars ages ago and loved it so much I was worried about moving onto Ashes to Ashes. I neednt have been so silly, tis splendid!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the TV tips Pip looks like I will have to get on the iview bandwagon. I already have 2 weeks worth of TV to catch up on so must add The Kennedys to my list. I am on holidays in the UK at the moment staying in Yorkshire & got quite a thrill today when I saw a copy of Sew La Tea Do in a gorgeous little shop in Skipton! also found the most lovely yarn shop, Purl & Jane. Hope you feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteHi Pip
ReplyDeleteYour website etc is super ace - you rock!
Thanks for the reminder about Design for Life - I watched the very last ep of last year's series, and it was gorgeous and emotional and true - vvv inspiring. Plus the comp is held in PARIS, one of my fave places in the world!!!
My little family (partner, cat and me) are watching Parks and Recreation on DVD - hilarious and very sweet at the same time, which is my favourite winning combination.
Hope you're feeling better soon

Hi Pip, I'm watching lots of BBC crime drama on the iPlayer...The Shadow Line at the moment. Gritty and v good acting. Also House on Sky, love House...Also I am crocheting a blanket and thinking about making your Miss Marlo Dress - can I just check - how will I know if the pattern is OK or not...I only got Sew La Tea Do at Christmas as am in UK. I remember a post way back about a printing error...also I am about to start a blog and I am thinking about having another baby quite a lot. So that is me right now! Nix X
ReplyDeleteI love a good swapping of fav TV programmes - thanks for starting the conversation Pip.
ReplyDeleteI too am loving the Kennedys and have to agree about Katie - not the right role for her. But the boys - awesome! I've seen Design fro Life - loved it. My fav programme at the moment is Artscape on ABC1 on a Sunday at 5pm and there is a programme on, on Monday nights at 8.30pm on ABC1 about families taking a year out of there life to go on an adventure - can't think of the title but it's a goodie.
I'll second Downton Abbey, I can never have enough Maggie Smith!
ReplyDeleteYou might also like South Riding? My friend got it for me so not sure how to track it down though...
Also I've been loving Lead Balloon on iview.
