:: Tell Me About Chicken Soup...

Is it easier to get sick when it's windy? I think it's a proven fact that germs are blowing around more on windy days, right?  I can picture them... they are like little nasty-faces looking for likely victims.  Possibly I was a likely victim because I have been working a bit too hard in the last month... and my immunity might be down, even though I've been super careful to take my vitamins and exercise regularly and eat well, I have been working most weekends and weekdays.  I am a bit tired out as a result. Possibly part and parcel of launching a book and putting your face everywhere, I think.  Anyhoo, the nasty-face germ got me and I started feeling super peaky last night. I'm in bed today feeling a bit sad and sorry, but determined to feel better soon.

Chicken soup is a good remedy for this kinda thing, methinks. Are you the soupy kind?   I like to make Sophie Dahl's chicken soup with the extra chicken-y croutons... or sometimes I make Bill Granger's quick chicken soup with the parsnip in it.  But do YOU have a favourite chicken soup recipe?  And if you are a vegetarian, what's your version of the get-well elixir?

Are you chicken soup with dumplings? Are you pho? Are you simple broth? Or do you need lots of vegetables?  Do you start afresh? Or do you like to use a BBQ chicken?  Do you have a family recipe?  Or do you have your own secret soup?  What are your chicken thoughts?

:: Five Awesome Online To-Do Lists

I am really QUITE keen on lists. Are you? I find that a list gives me a sense of purpose, and a sense of calm.  I love to write even the smallest tasks down and tick them off with a satisfied flourish (even if the thing I wrote down was a thing I have already done.)  I like to keep track of my progress and look over the ticked lists at the end of the day, marvelling at my productivity.  Are you that kind of person too? Perhaps you are less silly about it than me, but I am sure that you share my can-do intent.  Don't you?

I have 375 notebooks which contain lists in various states of completion.  I also have lists on store receipts, old envelopes, post it notes and other random shreds of paper.  It's a teensy bit ad hoc.  But it's very sustainable, I think. No scrap goes unused. You can call me the crazy scrap lady.

All these scrappy good intentions lead me to Twitter a few days ago.  I wanted to canvas the people who know (people on Twitter DO KNOW STUFF!) I wanted to find out about good To-Do lists apps, and especially about any To-Do Lists which might sit on your computer and sync to a smart phone.  Here are some of the Apps people recommended, and some which I like too!

1. Teux Deux :: You might know about this app if you are a Swiss Miss fan.  It's a collaboration betwixt herself (Swiss Miss) and her studio buds Fictive Kin.  I really like this one because it's lovely to look at and simple to use.  You access the Teux Deux website, log in and type in your to-dos, download the Teux Deux app for your phone (it's $2.99 well spent) and then your task list will sync between the two (or indeed on your iPad or iPod Touch). It's a super simple platform, no extra unnecessary bits and pieces to hurt your eyes, and you can just cross tasks off with the tap of a finger when completed, while uncrossed tasks will automatically transfer to the next day for (hopeful) completion. The whole syncing between computer and phone is important to me, because I prefer to use my computer for most things. I don't like tapping on my iPhone. I would much rather use a keyboard.  Syncing means I can type everything in via my regular web browser on my computer, and then it's all on my phone when I head out.  No frustrating dorking about with that tiny iPhone keyboard. I like that. Thank you Swiss Miss and Fictive Kin!

2. Seize The Day :: This is an iPhone only To-Do list.  Bum. No syncing or browser access. I still like it because it is nice and simple and has cute features like 'Completed Tasks' list (perfect for those of us who need a little morale boost sometimes!), task prioritizing, task tagging and daily reminders.  I quite like my phone to let me know what I need to do today, and (like most of these To-Do lists) Seize The Day will send a reminder list daily and get me up and at 'em.  Like Teux Deux, it will carry forgotten or incomplete tasks over to the next day.  And I like the name.  So there you go.  Shame that it doesn't sync to my computer, but I still like it because it's not over designed.

3. Evernote :: You may already be a user of Evernote.  It syncs between your computer and iDevice and you KNOW that I like that.  Mostly I use Evernote to clip web pages for offline viewing on my iPhone.  I do that because my data plan is sucky and there are some things I want to view when I'm out and about, like book reviews, or recipes or the like. It's super good for me to save the whole page at home using my wireless and then access them offline on my phone when I'm shopping or in a meeting or whatever.  On Twitter, people informed me that you can make To-Do lists with Evernote too. I'm still finding my way around the myriad of things Evernote is capable of (if anyone wants to write a post for this blog about the Top Ten Things Evernote Can Do, then email me!).

4. Producteev :: This is another one which syncs between computer and smart phone.  Operated via a simple 'dashboard' launch pad, it's got tons of useful features, but still looks clean and uncomplicated.  You can store tasks in folders (for instance I made folders like FRANKIE, JUSTB, BLOG, NICE LUNCHES & BILLS TO PAY) to keep things less cluttered (especially your brain!)  Producteev also lets you add other users to your To-Do lists, so that you can delegate tasks amongst a team. How cool is that? V excellent for collaborating and team work.   It has other great features, like the ability to email tasks or send them to Twitter for a bit of crowd sourced help.  Super dooper great, methinks.  Impressive and useful.

5. Todoist :: I really liked Todoist.  It looks good and it's really easy to use.  Again you can file your tasks in categories, schedule them, prioritise them and access on your computer or smart phone.  If you buy the premium version there are lots of other capabilities too, like adding to your task list via email.  Todoist was my  second best fave in terms of good looks, after Teux Deux, and its functionality is impeccable.

Are you feeling more organised now? Or were you already organised and using a different app or platform to do it?!  Let me know if you can help with To-Do organising in the comments!

xx Pip

                :: Tell Me About Porridge...

So. I am always questing for better health and more energy and happier days.  I can't help myself. I am an improvement junkie. I need things to be getting better every day. It is just my way.  I read a lot of books about happiness and health.  I pop in to blogs like Zen Habits, The Happiness Project and Sarah Wilson in my quest to make sense of life and health.  I plan for good times. I try to take care of myself, make sure that I am not too tired or eating rubbish or forgetting to drink water.  I take lots of vitamins and supplements.  Ya know, that kinda thing.

A couple of days ago I picked up a book by a scarily buff guy called The Perfect Day Plan. It's a book about approaching your day with a yin/yang point of view, drawing on Chinese medicine and age old principles for best health. It talks about using different parts of the day to do different kinds of tasks, to benefit your overall feeling good-ness.   I'm finding it really interesting and am going to adapt some of the things I do, according to the advice in this book.  I like to see what kinds of things make a difference to my health and happiness.  I'm totally up for change.

One of the things this book says is that the first thing you put into your body should not be tea or coffee.  Rather it should be something warm, nourishing (and preferably wheat free).  AND you should have a warm lunch too.  This keeps your chi happy, apparently. I don't really KNOW if my chi is happy, but I often skip breakfast or just have a crumpet or something.  This does not make me feel particularly good, so perhaps my chi is grumpy too.  I don't even KNOW why I skip breakfast sometimes... I think I just get distracted by the day ahead and sort of gloss over it in an unimpressed way.  I am going to try not to do that.  It's kinda dopey to say I am trying to look after my health and happiness and then NOT EAT BREAKFAST. Doh.

There's a recipe in the book for Porridge with protein powder. OMG. Is protein powder good? I do not know, but I know that I don't eat much protein so I am giving it a try.  I made my porridge with some warmed apple and honey and cinnamon and soy. It was NICE!  I don't even LIKE porridge. I do not understand its shape shifting, gluggy ways. But I am trying. I am.

As I ate my porridge yesterday (with TOO MUCH HONEY! ACK!) I thought that Chai Porridge would be a good invention.  I figured someone else had probably already thought of it, googled away and sure enough, heaps of recipes for Chai Porridge.  Like this one at the most amazingly great foodie blog, Food52.

So tell me. Do you like porridge? Or do you have to talk yourself into its baby food like texture? If you are a porridge nut, can you please tell me how to make it YOUR way? Is your chi happy?

                xx Pip

:: Last Night's Make Hey! Event...

Last night we had an event at Readings St Kilda for the release of Make Hey! All the seats were filled, which was nice, and we had lamingtons and melting moments and ginger beer together and chatted about craft and blogging and other good things.

I crocheted 16 Christmas baubles for the Readings window, and then lots of people who came along made a bauble or two, too!  Pretty great of those people, methinks!  Thank you people!  Keep your eye on the Readings Twitter account if you'd like to see the Christmassy baubley display they are planning!  I think it might go up today or tomorrow...

I got a really cute pin-cushion gift, from two really great people! (Hello Isabelle!) AND some flowers too... And I felt pretty special and undeserving, to be honest! Aw. Shucks.  I signed lots of books and got to talk to lots of really great ladies.   A whole gang of said ladies then trotted off to have a picnic afterwards (but my clan had to go to a dinner instead.)  I feel pretty lucky to be part of a community like this. I really do. Especially when I see them all doing good things together and supporting each other.

These are some of Gemma's photos of last night. Thanks Gem!

:: Bright Signs :: Quick Sticks!

You'd better lickety split if you are in Melbourne and want to catch the super-pop, gorgeous, bright, hopeful, sharp, happy, poignant, adorable, cheeky, rad exhibition that is Bright Signs by Gemma Jones.  La Jones is a very dear friend of mine and I have watched from the side-lines with much admiration as she has nurtured these paintings into existence.

Opening night was really great and involved a room full of people playing word association games with Gemma's works.

'Which one do you love the most?'
                'I'm Hanky Panky!'
                'Well, I'm Milk and Sugar!'
                'I'm Second Best!'
'I thought you'd be Girl Afraid!'

So great.  We all beamed happily and wondered what our favourites revealed about us, and what our pennant would say if we we painted our own.  Possibly mine would say 'Nice Times!'.  What would yours say?!

There were lots of supportive, smart people hanging about, kids, icy beer and Gocco prints too.  It's a show filled with Gemma's trademark sincerity, care and cheekiness.  I think you should go visit before it's too late.

Bright Signs is on at No Vacancy Gallery until October 30th.

Don't forget to tell me what your Pennant would say!!! Comment below!

                :: Sew Your Own Chewbacca...

I first saw Star Wars at the Port Hedland Drive In Theatre.  The whole family went along and we were totally mesmerised by Mr Lucas's festival of fruity freaks, not to mention Princess Leia's amazing bagel hair-do.  Star Wars is a favourite of my kids too, so it's kinda amazing that it's stood the test of time, I think.  Possibly Pilgrim thinks the same thing, because she's come up with this freaky-fab-free Chewbacca pattern, just for rad people like YOU!  AND just in time for Softies for Mirabel, too!

Head over here to see Pilgrim's Chewbaccca Softie and download the pattern!

:: Softies For Mirabel :: Mailbox Is Open!

EDIT :: Softies For Mirabel is Extended Til End of February 2012

Hello!  Well.  We're opening up the mailbox for Softies for Mirabel today!  You can start sending your toys, and I will photograph as many as I can (you can photograph them before you send them too and upload the images here) and store them for their upcoming exhibition!  They then get picked up by the rad people from The Mirabel Foundation and distributed to the kids they support.

You can find out all about Softies for Mirabel here! It is our crafty charity call-out, seeking handmade soft toys to gift to the kids supported by The Mirabel Foundation.  The Mirabel Foundation supports children who have been orphaned or are living with extended family due to parental substance abuse.  Of course you want to help, don't you?!

If you are not the makey kind, you can donate to Mirabel, or pick up something useful in the Mirabel shop!  Or you could tell other people about this great campaign, in case THEY are crafty!  School groups, work groups, sports groups are ALL encouraged to band together and get making!  And if it's just you, on your ownsome, then that is okay too!   Click here for guidelines.  Details of the exhibition coming very soon!

Help us to help Mirabel!  Go on!
