Have you ever made yoghurt? I was in a shop yesterday and they had EasiYo Yogurt Makers on sale for $20. I have never made yoghurt, but I know you don't really need an appliance to do it. Nevertheless, I bought the EasiYo. Here is why. I thought it would be a good reminder to make yoghurt. You know how sometimes if you buy the thing, you are more committed to using it?! Especially if it's sitting in your kitchen taking up space. Does that make sense to you?
Anyhoo, I bought it. Because Cam and Ari and Max love vanilla yoghurt. And I figured it was a great healthy habit to get into, the yoghurt making. I'm going to work out how to make some fancier flavours (without the flavour sachets and WITH vanilla beans or lemon or raspberries.)
Have you ever made yoghurt? What can you tell me about it? Do you like yoghurt?
xx Pip

I haven't done it for awhile, but when I did I sometimes did it without the sachets and I can't remember exactly how I did it, but I know it involved 10 TBS of powdered milk and one tablespoon of yoghurt. I think there was some other ingredients involved too, but I can't remember what they were. Hmm, very helpful comment I'm sure! You have reminded to get out my easiyo though!
ReplyDeleteGet your Easiyo out, Teegan!! xx
DeleteYes indeed! I've made yoghurt without using an appliance - just a dairy thermometer, a pot sitting in a larger pot of water, ladle, the starter culture and then a place to keep it warm - I use a Dream Pot. I've also made cheeses too - that's easier because we milk our own goats. :)
ReplyDeleteA dream pot! That sounds so cool! Very Grimm's Fairy Tales, IMO! x
DeleteThat's funny to read that comment on Grimm! We just played our Grimm's Fairy Tales happy families game last night. It is the nicest set of cards ever. I still haven't heard some of the stories mind you even after having these cards for 30 years or so!
DeleteOh & back on topic, I don't make yoghurt but I eat it! lol
Although I love a good fairy tale myself...a dreampot is a specially design pot in a thermal outer shell. You heat or cook the inner pot on a stove for 10 minutes or so and then place it in the thermal outer layer. It'll keep warming or slow cooking your food for hours afterwards. We use ours for yogurt making but also camping, picnics or long trips away from the house. So I forgot that people don't automatically know what I'm talking about...who hasn't heard of a dreampot after all? :)
DeleteOoh this is good. I want to find out more about yoghurt. It's so EXPENSIVE to buy the nice stuff at the shops, I KNOW that it can be made at home for a fraction of the price (and it might even be heaps nicer!)
ReplyDeleteOk, I will wait to hear how you go making nicer stuff. Then maybe you will convince me I need one to make it for my boys & I. We need more budget saving tips.
DeleteI have never made it but my Chiropractor makes it all the time. He says for the flavour, just buy your lost pot of favourite yoghurt and use a tablespoon of that to 'seed' your new youghurt. And then you can use your new yoghurt to seed the next pot!
ReplyDeleteWe've had easiYo since i was little (mid 90's) its so yummy and easy to make. us kids would make it if it ran out - without mum telling us to.
ReplyDeleteMy mum used to make a strawberry puree from strawberries and sugar cooked in a pot then blended to get out the lumps. we loved that cause we knew it was real berries.
and it works out cheaper then buying 1kg of yogurt from the dairy aisle.
Yes! I make it every week. I use the easy-yo thermos as it's simple and easy (though I've done it other ways too, because all you need is a warmish spot really). But I've never had failure with easy-yo. I use half a sachet with the rest made up with plain powdered milk - which works best for me to just have those things in the cupboard. You can use fresh yogurt and milk too :-) I make jams too and stir a teaspoon through the yoghurt just before serving for sweetening!
ReplyDeleteI have never made my own yoghurt before, but an awesome flavour combo is macadamia nut and lemon myrtle ♥
ReplyDeleteThank you for that tip! That sounds delish! Lemon myrtle!
DeleteWe have been using our Easiyo for years, mostly we make Greek Yogurt. We use the last bit of each batch to make the new batch, use 2 tablespoons of yogurt, 1 1/3 cups milk powder, 1 tablespoon of sugar.
ReplyDeletethis is handy to know. We always did buy lots of greek but not lately cos it is just so costly. It is great for summer salads & dips.
DeleteWe have had Easiyo for about 3 years. Boysenberry is a cracker! We add whatever seasonal berries are around to the vanilla. Have just found a second one at the local op shop for $5 and whooped with joy as we go through about a litre a day! It has become part of the nightly ritual to soak oats for porridge and put on a pot of yoghurt. Excellent good thing Pip!
ReplyDeleteI have one of these ! It is great and super easy & quick to use. I use the sachets but you could totally do it without them. Definitely saves lots of $$ too.
ReplyDeleteHi Pip, Look at this post... She makes lovely looking yoghurt and makes fruit smoothies for her family all the time.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.thefrugalgirl.com/2009/10/how-to-make-homemade-yogurt-2/
I hope to do this myself this week as I'm on holidays and it's homemade, frugal and crafty...
Oh thank you! I am off to look at that RIGHT NOW!! x
DeleteI like buying the unsweetened Greek yoghurt sachets and then adding vanilla and a little sugar. It makes gorgeous thick yoghurt. Yum!
ReplyDeleteOkay, so one day i was all virtuous and bought said Yogurt maker....
ReplyDeleteit sat in my cupboard..waiting patiently for the day it would change my
greedy yogurt gobbling ways...sadly, it stayed in there unused..unloved(,i was I have to say-frightened of it!)..until a friend of mine came and was talking about how she would LOVE to make her own yogurt!! "HERE ! i said, its yours"..must ask her how she went !!!
I bought an inexpensive yoghurt maker several years ago. I love it. It makes the yummiest smooth yoghurt. Easy peasey.
ReplyDeleteI've got an Easiyo yoghurt maker - they're made here in NZ. Easy as to use and I knock out 1 kg of yoghurt in it overnight. The kids go mad for it, as we can vary the toppings any way we would like. It's also handy in case you need plain yoghurt for recipes too. Have fun with it!
ReplyDeleteYeah I have the easiyo- and we don't get the sachets anymore, I just use a dollop of the old batch of yoghurt into milk straight out of the carton. I do find thought that successive batches seem to not get as thick, so I start again with a dollop from a store-bought one.
ReplyDeleteI make lots of yoghurt. I flavour it with vanilla essence, or lemon curd, or chopped dried apricots (leave a couple of hours) or whatever fresh fruit is in season. I also strain it overnight though a sieve lined with muslin to make a soft farmer's cheese that you can flavour with herbs. Bon appetit!
ReplyDeleteCHEESE! That is amazing/cool! I will do that! Thank you Kay!
DeleteHey Pip
ReplyDeleteWe're lucky enough to have raw milk delivered by a local farmer so I've been making my own from that for a while. But before that I used an easiyo with great success. It's virtually as quick & easy as making a cup of tea.
Half fill the container with water. Add a cup and a third of full fat milk powder (has to be full fat) and a couple of tablespoons of yoghurt from your previous batch. Give it a good shake. Fill it to the top with water. Leave it overnight then pop it in the fridge to set.
enjoy!

Oh that's cool. Do this, do that, then Ta-Dah! Yoghurt! I am loving everyone's tips! Thanks for your tip, Rachel! x
DeleteWe use the Easy Yo maker too, with the Greek sachets. I've heard of people having success with making their own using the maker, and also of disasters, so I'm not sure what governs your success rate! I bet it would be even cheaper to make it from scratch, though perhaps not so insanely convenient as the sachets. I stay well clear of their flavoured/sweetened ones though, and made the mistake of trying out the custard for a friend in Canada before she ordered some (just don't, that was my advice!)
ReplyDeleteThis is a very good thing! We make yogurt every couple of days from raw milk. I make a litre at a time and just put the jars in an eski to keep warm. If you like thicker yogurt you can add milk powder (or cream!) when you're heating the milk. I've never made flavoured yogurt but if the kids want that i just stir through some honey, vanilla, fresh fruit (blood plum is our favorite - yum!), or homemade jam. Good luck making your yogurt!
ReplyDeleteTry using a slow cooker...http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008/10/you-can-make-yogurt-in-your-crockpot.html
ReplyDeleteI love making yoghurt! I use an EasiYo maker after seeing my mum use one with great success. I haven't tried making up any flavours yet, but my mum makes a healthy vanilla version by using a plain, unsweetened sachet and adding vanilla essence and a little bit of stevia powder (a natural sweetener) to sweeten instead of using sugar.
ReplyDeleteI used to make yoghurt in the easi-yo all the time when my daughter was little, it was so great and convenient. I just used to use the greek sachets.
ReplyDeleteThen we discovered she had a dairy intolerance, so has to avoid as much dairy as possible, so I ended up giving mine away as I just couldn't use it enough just for myself.
But they are so great if you go through a lot of yoghurt!
A friend of mine uses her Easiyo to make soyghurt, just soy milk and some organic Jalna yoghurt as a starter.
DeleteI can't believe this...I got a dairyo at the oppy a few weeks back & have just had my first success yesterday!
ReplyDeleteWe is TWINS! I like it!
