:: A Year Of Good Things : 4/366!

Awright. I will bow to the pressure of the leap year and do 366!  One bonus day of Good Things can't be a bad thing right?!

Today I decided to do a good thing for me (again!) I decided to take the time to make a nice breakfast. I try to do this as much as I can, I really do, but generally I am not a breakfast person. I like to wake up, turn on my computer and start work. I might slide a cup of tea in there, if I am feeling a bit self-nurturey.  SOME days I have breakfast, granted.  But I would say that it's 3 out of 7 days in the week. I KNOW that is bad. I have read lots of great books telling me to eat a warm hearty breakfast.  Remember my porridge phase?  Yes?  The thing is I DO try to eat breakfast for a few weeks.... and then I decide that there are other things I need to do first. And then it is lunch time. And then I have some catching up to do, and I feel a bit grumpy to boot.

It's not that I'm not committed. It's more that I'm not that good at prioritizing myself.

Are you a breakfast person?  What do you like to have?  Or do you not have, and then turn into a grumpy cow by 11am?  Like me?

Feel free to join in the Year Of Good Things  at any time, in your own way, at your own pace!

xx Pip

Tip :: How I Poached This Egg
Take a free range egg. Crack it into a cup to be sure it is nice and intact.  My egg was at room temperature.  Bring a saucepan of water to the boil. Slug some white vinegar into it (about a tablespoon). Allow the water to come back to the boil.  Slide the egg in and then turn the water down to a low simmer.  Let the egg cook slowly in the calm SIMMERY water.  Mine took about 2 minutes.  Now, CAREFULLY take an appropriately sized glass and push the open end of it down onto the egg (avoiding the yolk) to cut your egg into a neater shape. DO NOT let the steam burn you!  Remove the glass (DO NOT LET THE STEAM BURN YOU!) and carefully lift the egg from the water. Allow the water to drain off for 20 seconds or so. Plop onto a plate, being careful not to pierce the yolk.

  3. Ohhh, this looks so good. It's been a while since I checked in with you. Too long in fact! It's dinner time here, of day three. I may start my day four off in a similar fashion! Fooooood...

  4. Oh that looks delicious! And reminds me that I need to have my breakfast, I'm starving! I'm off to the hen house to get me some eggs.

  5. I used to be exactly like you about breakfast. Now I can't live without it. I make a tray every morning with a pot of leaf tea and milk jug, cloth napkins and all... I deserve it! I can't believe it, I just made almost exactly the same breakfast as yours for my Mum this morning. Sometimes being a full-time carer puts me on auto-pilot and I make her the same boring breakfast every morning, but today I poached her eggs, toasted english muffins with cheese, grilled tomatoes, triple smoked gypsy ham, fresh cracked pepper and her crazy need for chilli flakes with every meal.
I guess that's my daily-do-gooder right there... heehee

  6. Grumpy cow for sure. I always start the day with a dandelion tea (with soy of course) and like you suddenly realise that it is lunch. Deep analysis over the years has lead me to the following conclusion - I am fundamentally a savoury person (don't get me wrong, I still love sweet) and cereal just doesn't hit the spot. Savoury just seems to take too much time - other than vegemite toast! And as much as I love your brekky - bagels and parma ham are non-existent here and cherry tomatoes and free range eggs are in the "it's your lucky day" department. For some reason Brie (the good stuff) is the easy ingredient. It just wouldn't be the same with champagne ham and toast! I'll stick with grumpy cow - leopard, spots and all that...

  7. Yum! That looks delicious! For years all I ate was white toast with Nutella for breakfast. Each bite dipped in black coffee. OK, yeah, tasty! But not so healthy. Now that I am trying to get some exercise every day I have to have protein, and fibre. So, most mornings I have an apple, chopped, with three big dollops of organic yogurt, topped with a scoop of homemade granola. Sometimes I will have cheese or a scrambled egg on whole wheat toast. And coffee. 8^)

  8. OK, Pip, so I know you've already said that you know that you should have breakfast, and I'm just going to tell you a little more. You SHOULD definitely ALWAYS have breakfast. I've seen some of the breakfasts you have and they make me jealous. They look so yum, and healthy, and sometimes they're not things I'll think of for breakfast, then I try them! Bagel with brie and cherry tomatoes tomorrow. Yes please. If you or your blog readers are ones who struggle with eating breakfast, live by my motto - you can have (pretty much) anything you like for breakfast, your body will burn most of it off during the day anyway. Cigarettes are not considered foods. I was a Personal Trainer for many years and if I had a client who struggled with gaining energy for the day, or struggling to lose weight, I'd get them to start with just eating breakfast. Some started with 1 piece of toast, some started with a piece of fruit, some started with one rasher of bacon, and after they slowly introduced themselves to breakfast, they started to achieve their goals. 100% of them. Obviously some had to change other things too, but breakfast is always my number 1 step for any person.
I'm not having a go at your non-breakfast eating, just a few tips for the readers who might be struggling with gaining more brain power, energy or enthusiasm for the day.
    Much love :)

  9. I used to a particular medication in the morning which would make you violently ill if taken without food.I'm not really a sweet morning person either, makes me drowsy...I either have cereal, nuts and yogurt and a small amount of fruit, vegemite toast or a cheese and tomato toastie...hot buttered toast is a constant temptation that my waistline hates!

  10. I find it really hard to eat breakfast too, but since studying nutrition I now make sure I have a huge breakfast every day.. It is just soo important.. your brain literally can not work to capacity unless you have breakfast, it needs fuel after fasting all night.

Porridge is a great breakfast, eggs are excellent too..

I think this is a great 'good thing'!

  11. Oh GUYS! I am really loving reading these comments. They make me feel a bit more hopeful about breaking my bad/no breakfast habits! I am super pleased that people are commenting! A lot of the time no one comments! I guess these are everyday things that affect us all, and that's something to talk about! Thank YOU! xx

  12. Yum, I LOVE breakfast, I always have. I can only remember once in my life missing it, and that was when I was rowing mornings in high school - just forgot. Sometimes I have two breakfasts, especially on the weekend. But most days I have some weetbix covered with whatever muesli was recently on special, two big spoonfuls of yoghurt and lots of milk, full-fat. If I've run out of yoghurt, then yes, I get cranky and staaaarving before lunch.
I like Red Shoe Artist's idea of the cloth napkins. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing in style!

  13. I'm a breakfast lover now...was quite happy having a freddo frog and coffee for breakfast in the good ole days...but didn't help me much!

    Now...can't do without it!

Love the tip about the glass with the poached egg! Eggscellent! Sorry...bad joke!

The other thing I heard about poached eggs is gently slide them into the really bubbly bits of water!

Good luck with your continued breakfast ventures!

  14. I have been skipping breakfast for ages without meaning to. I have always been a breakfast person. But I have now started protein smoothies with vital greens and mega oil and a banana. I love knowing exactly what I am going to have and it keeps my energy up until I am ready to make a mid morning feed. Because i am not starving or grumpy I make better decisions on what to snack on. Is good! bec x P.s - I slip a couple of cooked brekkys in during the week now on lazy days :)

  17. That brekie looks so yummy!
I know what you mean about missing breakfast - I hardly EVER have it. Maybe sometimes on weekends when the MR makes a fry up, but thats it!

  18. I'm hopeless with brekkie too despite knowing how bad it is to skip it. It is usually 2 back to back coffees and maybe the kids leftover breakfast. Terrible. And yes a grump by 11 :-) I DO love your do-gooder idea. Genius. Makes me happy just thinking about it. I'll be in (somehow). Have a great night! Mel

  19. Yahoo! I just realised the anon section is back in your commenting section! Thankyou for that as not everyone has an account with all those googly places. Hmmm breakfast - let me just say this. Back in the day I was a coffee and a cigarette girl. I know. Yum. Then the light went on and I just knew it was time to change. I dont do fancy schmancy but I do have nice muesli or some toast with honey and always coffee. Sue :)

  21. Yum! That is definitely a good thing for you or anyone. I am a breakfast person everydaywithoutfail. Sometimes I sleep in and breakfast is more like at lunch time but I still have breakfast and then just skip lunch. I am a toast girl. Two pieces of grainy bread toast and I alternate the spreads depending on what I feel like. And there is always at least 1 piece of fruit involved as well. Sometimes 2, or 3!

When I don't feel like toast I have a banana smoothie with lots of extra goodies in it. Yum!

  24. Sometimes missing breakfast is just a busy Mama thing I think. We multitask. We get distracted. We make sure everyone else is ok...
